But there's a lot of room to make this show something entirely different from 'Sherlock' or any other adaptation. I'm not talking about changing the gender of any of the characters even.
The format for one will make a huge difference. British television has very short seasons, Sherlock for example only has three episodes per season. This being an American network, there would be at least 20 episodes. They would have to drag out cases over several eps, make up brand new ones, add other (personal) storylines for that to ever work for more than one season.
The location will mean changes as well, not just for the stories but also for the characters/their backgrounds.
So I am interested to see what CBS makes of it, but I do understand the need to compare it to 'Sherlock' and prevent it from being too similar for both shows' sakes.

Plus, there's at least a year between seasons. S1 was in July-Aug. of 2010, S2 was this Jan., and S3 won't air until at least 2013. So not only would this series mean more Sherlock, but it would air more often, which could be a good thing.
