I had the same thought when I saw the first episode of Grimm. Both are awesome in their own way and despite the similarities there are enough differences to make each one distinct.

Scully wants a word with those fans.

I liked Supernatural because it's like X-Files, so this comment makes me happy. XF FTW!

(Anonymous) 2012-02-04 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
Your ugly face and cat are showing, OP.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-04 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
OP: Not anymore! Thanks for reporting the issue, even while doing so showed a great deal of insecurity on your own appearance on your part. ;) (next time I will find a upload site that doesn't make it easy to trace. Ah well, live and learn.)

(Anonymous) 2012-02-04 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
Don't let an anonymous ass on the internet bug you. He/she/it's a fuckwad.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-04 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
Such strong second-hand embarrassment when this happens. *shudder*

(Anonymous) 2012-02-04 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
OP here: Ironically, the only pictures of myself in there were me with the cat, and me partying out with friends (at McDonalds, before we went clubbing. Because we are high-class like that.).

But meh, I don't care. I use another site for my main downloads, so the vast majority of the stuff on there is at least a year, if not two years, old. Enjoy the Warcraft test subjects when I was debating what my avatars should look like before Cataclysm came out, old post-secret seecrets that were made for my characters for a old NaNoWriMo, and lots of sims stuff. Lots and lots of sims stuff. Yay abandoned legacies! (Seriously, it's weird because most of this stuff doesn't even apply to me anymore. Kinda a trip down memory lane... I think this is the first time I have flipped through it in about a year.)

(Anonymous) 2012-02-04 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
The cat's adorable, dipshit. Your taste is clearly for shit.

[identity profile] sergeanthowarth.livejournal.com 2012-02-04 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
THANK YOU. It makes me irrationally angry when people are like, "oh, Grimm; isn't that like Supernatural?" because 1) they're really not that similar, and 2) I don't like Supernatural and really like Grimm.

[identity profile] joshua-glass.livejournal.com 2012-02-04 08:16 am (UTC)(link)
Thissss. I didn't mind SPN's first three seasons when it was all about the demon-hunting/good music/etc, but then I just sort of lost interest and haven't watched anything after that, but I love Grimm!

I am just wishing two things:

1. Wtf happened to the sub-plot with Nick's boss (Renard?)?
2. Either give Juliet(te) a personality and some screen time or just get rid of her. It's like they put her in in the beginning to give Nick a normal live to interrupt, and then forgot she existed except when it's convenient. Hell, I feel like he spends more time with Monroe than Juliet(te).

He does spend more time with Monroe than Juliette, unless you count when he's asleep!

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2012-02-04 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
As a fan of both shows, the connection is tenuous at best. Supernatural is very much caught up in the Christian mythology, with a huge bit of brotherly codepentant love on the side. Whereas Grimm is a classic fairy tale motif/buddy cop show fusion, with a very weak interpersonal story that mainly revolves around the central character juggling 3 separate almost entirely non-intersecting lives: Him as a cop, him as some kind of vampire slayer, and him as a boyfriend.

Once Upon a Time is closer, thematically to it, but still very different in execution.

Frankly I think Grimm could be vastly improved if perhaps two if not all three interpersonal roles got merged and perhaps his cop friend and his girlfriend and his werewolf friend could actually, you know, work together as a team against the problem of the week.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-04 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
OP: YES. Exactly. I just keep on scratching my head and going 'WTF' when I keep on seeing these comments of 'Eh, just a rip-off of Supernatural' at all these places. They are really nothing alike.

And I also agree with the last bit. I think they will do it eventually. Hopefully. Fingers crossed.

Supernatural is a classic buddy show. (I loved it until the middle of S4. We broke up though.) Once Upon a Time is paranormal romance. (Can't stand it, not least because I'm adopted.) Grimm which I do love a lot is not only a cop show, but was created by the people who brought us Profit. Expect massive amounts of backstabbing :)

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2012-02-04 06:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Backstabbing is fine. Maybe. Maybe not. Right now they are running Nick as a lone-wolf, doing his own thing, using others as physical resources but not emotional ones. Backstabbing someone who doesn't actually trust anyone in the first place is not that powerful.

I just think that the character emotional dynamic is very weak because of the way they set it up. They have Nick (who is, let's be honest, a rather stiff, unemotional actor) doing all the emotional heavy lifting. There's no team dynamic, since it's all Nick interacting individually with people. There's no buddy dynamic, because there's no mutual trust and there's only one main character, Nick. There's potential for buddy dynamic with both Monroe and Hank, but it hasn't gelled. You just don't see them talking about their lives to each other or putting their lives on the line for each other. So far the domestic dynamic is frankly... dull. Not only doesn't Nick confide in her about things that as his fiance-to-be she should damn well know he doesn't even discuss the above board parts of his cases. And what she does when he isn't around is a complete mystery.

The one character that I am most emotionally attached to is Monroe, but I think that has to do more with the fact that the actor is charismatic than the writing. The rest -- well, hopefully it will be given an opportunity to grow, because you really can't build a dynamic when one of the partners keeps everything interesting a secret.

Thank you for the book rec!

THE SISTERS GRIMM <333
omg, I listened to the book on tape of that a long time ago, I don't think I finished the series; must get on that. Looking back on it, I think it's safe to say that that was my favorite fairy-tale retelling thing ever. Mr. Canis was my favorite :)
And yeah, when I heard about Grimm and what it was about, The Sisters Grimm was the first thing I thought of. They like very similar concepts.

[identity profile] robintheshrew.livejournal.com 2012-02-04 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
I prefer Grimm. Shoot me, Idc

[identity profile] kanjo-girl.livejournal.com 2012-02-04 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
I don't really see it... I guess it's because they both deal with supernatural stuff? But I like Grimm way more than Supernatural, so I guess I won't see the deep similarities.

[identity profile] streussal.livejournal.com 2012-02-04 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
...if it did rip off/was inspired by The Sister Grimm, Grimm sure became a sausage-fest. (Another connection with SPN, but there's a million shows with that element.)

[identity profile] ann89103.livejournal.com 2012-02-04 05:16 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I never made any connection between the two shows. Then again, I love Grimm and only made it through the first two episodes of Supernatural.

[identity profile] natural-blue-26.livejournal.com 2012-02-04 07:52 am (UTC)(link)
Your adorable toast icon makes me all kinds of irrationally happy ^_^

[identity profile] lydzi.livejournal.com 2012-02-04 10:56 am (UTC)(link)
Yes THANK YOU ANON! Honestly, I never watched SPN so I can't compare but Grimm's overall idea directly comes from those books, no one will make me think otherwise.
