MLP:FiM has a lot going for it. It's a cute and nice looking show with fun characters and good musical numbers. You don't have to justify why you like it to anybody be you 2, 20 or 200 years old.

It is one of those shows that should annoy me or just completely go over my head as I'm older than it's target audience. But...I just don't care. It makes me laugh, the characters are charming and it always feels like it has a lot of heart put into it. It's my comfort blanket for when I'm recovering from my other angsty shows (side eyes SPN, Misfits and Sherlock).

Although the female-default thing is pretty cool too. I'm not someone who really cares a whole lot about female representation in the media (even though I feel like I should care more), but I love love love it when a cast just happens to be full of female characters but ISN'T about being female, if you know what I mean.

Plus, while each character exemplifies a certain character type (Twilight's the bookworm, Fluttershy's the soft-spoken nervous one, Rarity's the beauty queen, etc.), they never feel one-dimensional or like they depend too much on one gag to be funny. They let each character BREATHE, and that's just really nice in an industry where stereotypes run pretty rampant and it's hard to find real characters you can sympathize with and enjoy.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-04 06:00 am (UTC)(link)Lauren Faust was hired to work on PPG, and met her husband Craig McCracken there, but he was the creator and she was involved on a subordinate level, moving up over time. He also created Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends; her role in that show was bigger from the beginning, afaik, and the character of Frankie is based on her.
She's no longer the Executive Producer of MLP:FiM... she stepped down after the first season's episodes.

It's fun. It genuinely makes me laugh. Not only is the writing good, but it's also cartoony. I think it defies this "things for girls/women can't be funny" trope that is quite pervasive.
It's pretty. I like the character designs and animation.
The characters are interesting. And I honestly just like having a group of girls as the main protagonists. Also, I just love how three-dimensional they are. In fact, I get quite annoyed when people say things like "lol, the element of generosity is greedy" or "lol, element of truth". That's what makes the show good! They embody both sides of their element, which not only makes them realistic, but also avoids preachiness. IDK, I think most comments are tongue-in-cheek, so I try to not be annoyed, but still...
I like slice-of-life stories, and I think the plot-related things can be quite exciting (I mean, how amazing was the season 2 premiere?)
I like the songs. They're fun and the singing is nice.
It cheers me up. Honestly, that's the only thing that really matters to me.
And there are probably a couple of other reasons I just can't think of right now.

I'm not actually so into the characters or the show that it's my absolute favourite ever, but honestly FiM is just some harmless fun! It's beautifully animated, everything's happy and colourful and it teaches some good messages that honestly some adults could do with learning.
Just stay away from the hardcore bronies who think Lauren Faust can do no wrong and that ponies are sexy, though.

Really, if it's fun and doesn't harm anyone, I don't see why you should worry about that.
