aw man, I know what you mean. =/

This is how I feel about writing. I just cannot write original fiction anymore. :/

If it means anything, I don't think it makes you less of an artist.

[identity profile] writerserenyty.livejournal.com 2012-02-11 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I know the feeling. I'm writing a fic right now (for Once Upon a Time) and I feel SO much more inspiration for that than I do for my original novel that I'm trying to work on. It's frustrating as hell.

OP

The worst part about this is I can remember a time when it wasn't the case. Before I really got into fandom(and more importantly, before I had internet in the home), I still did fanart here and there but I was predominantly doing my own things. I had ideas. I could come up with one fantastical piece after another and it was so easy.

It feels like, in some way, that fandom took creativity away from me. It's so hard to come up with a design or a piece on my own, yet I could do the exact same thing for a fandom related thing in seconds.

At least I'm getting it back in small spurts. Working on my webcomic (a personal, original product) is getting me back into that place where I can feel creative all the time. It's not a very big feeling right now and I know it's going to take so much longer but I feel eventually I'll get to that place again where making something original doesn't feel like a chore.

Yeah, this is exactly how I feel at times.

It's really tough, and I really am trying to work on my own creative writing. But yeah, I know how you feel.

I'm sorry, anon, I don't think I understand. You say you have a webcomic, but when you want to draw original pictures/characters, nothing comes out?

If you have a webcomic, surely they're your original characters, right? So you can draw original things. I know you mean 'not webcomic things'. But surely you realise you contradicted yourself, right?

(Anonymous) 2012-02-11 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry, I should have clarified; I'm working on a webcomic, but I've yet to publish it (mostly because it's been so difficult to create the plot, interesting characters etc). For me, it's easier to create work for pre-existing characters and concepts than it is to come up with a single image that's completely original.

But yes, the webcomic is an original idea with characters and plot to go with it, you are right with that. It's just proving more difficult to create ideas for that story then it would a fandom thing.

If any of this makes any sense >>;

It definitely doesn't make you any less of an artist. I wish to hell I could write fanfiction or draw fanart, but all I can write and draw is my own original stuff - and whilst it's rewarding, I'll never be able to interact with a fandom quite the same way as fanfiction/fanart allows you to do, and it makes me sad that I'll probably never have that. But that said, keep on trying! It may just click one day. ♥

I wouldn't really feel that bad, artists make livings off of constantly drawing other people's work. That's why I've always wondered why people have a thing against fanart, it's actually unlikely you'll grow up to draw your own original story if you're a comic artist or an animator, it's more likely you'll be drawing other people's characters.

And if you can't draw something original chances are you don't have enough reference. "Original" often just means an artist used various amounts of inspiration to come up with a design, when I'm stuck google images is always there. Chances are the artists you respect and admire are NOT always drawing completely out of their head, reference is important.

This!

[identity profile] cloud-riven.livejournal.com 2012-02-11 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
If you feel that way, yeah. You do know a lot of illustration is based on working with someone else's (let's say, an art director's) ideas, right? I wouldn't say an illustrator isn't an artist though, mostly because I think their technical skill totally counts for it. [eta]Same with fanart, and other works.

Your creativity might be stifled at the moment, but I hope you don't keep thinking less of your ability for it. Good luck, OP!

I am definitely going through this right now. My brother asked me what story ideas I was working on right now since we're both creative types, and I had no idea how to tell him the biggest project I've got bouncing around my head was a Friendship is Magic story.

I think the thing is, we grow attached to characters we see like people we meet, and we want to tell their stories when the canon material doesn't. I don't think it makes you any less of an artist, as you might find over time that things you see will inspire your own ideas.

I know how you feel very strongly, OP. I like coming up with character designs, but I have trouble turning them into actual characters and doing plots, where as with fanart I find stuff like that comes naturally. My major at art school is cartooning, so I feel that extra pressure to come up with an original story and create a Great Graphic Novel or something, and it really bummed me out. I've even tried basing original characters after celebrities and athletes I like, but it doesn't have the same spark as the original people do. However, thinking it over recently, I realized that everyone has their strengths and weaknesses when it comes to art and that doesn't mean that they are less creative than someone else, just that theirs works differently.

If you really want to do an original webcomic, maybe try finding a writer who likes your ideas. Most comic artists work with writers. If not, you should continuing doing fanart if that is what you truly love to do! Good luck :)

For years I couldn't write anything that wasn't fanfic, and then more recently I started to write little originals and joined a couple of writing groups on Deviant Art. I don't think you should feel like less of an artist! But if you want to do original stuff, don't feel like you can never do it. It just might take a while to figure out how.

Sounds like the job of an illustrator. Pretty sure they fall under the category of artist.

I have a pretty hard time drawing original pieces outside of Zombies, Fanart, and animals. I know how you feel.

Hang in there, OP. I hope inspiration hits you soon. :)

[identity profile] corvigryph.livejournal.com 2012-02-12 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
Oh op I feel the very same way. It really helps to just... let go and do all the fanart you want. I tried to force myself to do original work even though I had a plethora of fanart ideas and the result was that I produced nothing fulfilling.

Just do what inspires you, and push into original work at your own pace! I don't think for me personally, that fandom saps my originality so much as it overloads my creativity does that make sense?

[identity profile] corvigryph.livejournal.com 2012-02-12 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
Oh OP i know just how you feel. I have the same problem.. in the past I would force myself to prioritize original stuff but.. all my inspiration and drive was going towards fan related things. As a result i didn't produce anything fulfilling.

I wouldn't worry to much about fandom saping creativity though! I don't think it's so much that fandom stunts originality, just that fandom overloads your senses a bit does that make sense?

You can still do original stuff don't worry! Just pace yourself. :D

[identity profile] barnabys-bane.livejournal.com 2012-02-12 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
I'm this way with writing. Can't come up with my own plots and things to save my life.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-12 07:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I have exactly the same problem. I can draw basically everything/ copy real world, but I cannot draw anything if I have to use my imagination only. I feel like the copy ninja Kakashi..I can write, but not draw? WTF self..
