I don't know if it's because of his relationship, but YGOTAS definitely hasn't been good in a very long time. The videos hardly abridge the show anymore, the original personalities of the characters have been warped and exaggerated so much that you can't even see their original selves in them (haha, I could go on about this in YGOTAS and another series...), the same jokes are used over and over.... Sometimes LK makes some funny jokes that get a chuckle/smile out of me, but then it's usually followed by some really forced, unfunny joke. I kinda feel like he doesn't want to make them anymore, but feels like he should?

(Anonymous) 2012-02-12 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
As much as it pains me to admit it, I agree. I wish he ended the series with the end of the second season, right there with the credits rolling. The season zero abridged is actually better and funnier than the abridged cancelled series, so I still have very high hopes for that project.

I agree about Zero Abridged

(Anonymous) 2012-02-12 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
Season 0 abridged is pretty good so far.

As for the Cancelled Series, I'm not impressed. I definitely dislike it when people try to rush him, so I wait patiently for him to make his videos. The way he treats the characters makes me sick. The jokes about Mai, Malik and Bakura were unneeded. They were only used to make Dark Yuugi look like a prick.

The abridged counterparts are basically taking over the actual characters in the fandom. I also dislike it when he has to resort to a "useless Jaden" joke, it shows that he's seriously running out of material.

"The way he treats the characters makes me sick."

Wow. Are you being serious?

[identity profile] obabscribbler.livejournal.com 2012-02-12 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
Yikes! While I agree with some things you've said (the part about YGO:TAS characterisation replacing canon as the default setting when people write the cast in a lot of the fandom, which is actually more a reflection of the fandom itself and the mentality of the people in it than LK and what he does) you do come across as rather bitter and ... overly serious. 'Makes you sick'? Really? Perhaps you didn't mean to sound so vehement, but that does seem quite an emphatic way of talking about an unofficial satire that, while it has gained notoriety and become (insanely) popular, would not exist if not for a love of the canon material. If TAS has started to affect your love of YGO and you don't like the direction it has taken, then maybe it's better to stick with the place in its timeline when you still liked it and not go any further, or go back to canon entirely.

Personally, while some of the changes in TAS have been jarring, that's what you get when something goes from being the product of one mind to that of several. It may just be a reverse case of 'working alone you can't please all people all the time' - more 'lots of people working together can't please every individual'. Or something. I still like it for what it is: a bit of satire not intended to be anything but a fun way to pass the time and reflect that, daft as it is, YGO has endured for so long because we like daft things, however much we like to pretend otherwise.

[You have no idea how long I spent thinking of the right way to phrase this post so it didn't make me sound like a preachy knobhead. I think I may sound more like a pleb though. Feh.]

[identity profile] smittenlotus.livejournal.com 2012-02-12 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
Are you talking about the jokes in the last episode about Mai being "slutty" and Malik and Bakura looking like women? You do realize this is hardly the first time LK's used jokes like that, right?

You sound pretty bitter. No offense, but I'm one of the biggest fans of Yami (aka Dark Yugi) out there, and really, I think you're taking it way too seriously. You remind me of someone infamous on Deviantart who flipped their shit over the constant "Shut up Mokuba" jokes.

thank you this

(Anonymous) 2012-02-12 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
I've been thinking the same thing. Kinda. Or maybe I just lost interest and knowing about his private life made him too real and now I take it too seriously thinking about what it implies about his personal life?

[identity profile] smittenlotus.livejournal.com 2012-02-12 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know, I do and don't agree. I laughed at the more recent episodes, and while there has been a bit of painting Yami as a jerk, I don't think it was in too serious a manner. There is a bit of reliance on inside jokes but as far as the pop culture stuff goes, I sort of expected that with the Noa arc. It's all about the digital world and popular media in general.

I honestly can't wait to see how the finale with Yami Marik goes down though. There's so much opportunity for good jokes there.

[identity profile] obabscribbler.livejournal.com 2012-02-12 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
I'm glad to see someone else who doesn't mind the latest episodes. I mainlined the series a few weeks ago, and the biggest change I could detect was the plethora of new voices. I still laughed though. I was beginning to think I was the only one.

[identity profile] smittenlotus.livejournal.com 2012-02-12 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
Yep. I adore Yami, and I think him acting like an ass is pretty funny sometimes. As far as I've seen it hasn't gotten THAT bad, in personal opinion.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-12 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry, but....what happened with his personal life?

I mean, I always thought the show went downhill (or at least- got released more slowly) when he got a girlfriend (I think she played Rebecca?) and even got married. (I assume to the same girl)

Was there some other relationship that messed him up emotionally? I'm not trying to pry, I'm just concerned. I've been a fan of YGOTAS since like...maybe episode 6? :( I still look up to the guy. He may not be the most talented person in existance, and not all of his jokes are funny, but his timing and the way the jokes are written are just so wonderful...(imho anyway)

(Anonymous) 2012-02-12 04:30 am (UTC)(link)
He didn't get married, I don't think. I think they were engaged and they broke it off. I don't know if it was mutual or what though. It was quite awhile ago.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-12 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
(previous anon here) Oh so that's what happened...I had no idea! I remember the proposal and then there was like a Disney world video, so I assumed that was their honeymoon or something, I had no idea that they broke it off D:

Thanks for letting me know

(Anonymous) 2012-02-12 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
He did get married, but for personal reasons, the marriage didn't work out.

Now he's married again, and this time, everything seems to be going well.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-12 05:34 am (UTC)(link)
Oh wow really? I have no idea who his new bride is!

Its just as well though- I'm glad things are going well now!

(Anonymous) 2012-02-12 07:44 am (UTC)(link)
He basically posted his private life on LJ and expected people not to read it.

Obviously 10,000 people read it

First wife (now annulled) was trolled to death by fanbase
He was surprised when someone told his parents he was bi (after posting to LJ)
Now he's left LJ, where he first started TAS/got first followers.
TAS has gone downhill/never the same since.

Seriously if you're an internet celebrity and post anything on the internet people are going to read it.

If I remember correctly, he did comment about his relationship stuff on his tumblr and how his IRL life keeps him busy. As for the jokes getting old... I expect it from someone handling an abridged series with a few writers who happen to be his close friends.

[identity profile] easilyentranced.livejournal.com 2012-02-12 11:23 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, from what I understand, he did get married, but it didn't work out. He started going to conventions and stuff around the time all that happened, so it was around two or three years ago. He's now remarried to someone else and living in the US, so I don't know why OP is acting like that relationship broke him. He's obviously doing a lot better for himself.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-12 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know, I think it's going uphill again. Also, he did announce on twitter once that after this season, he'll go back to doing his own voices etc. I'm okay with this season being a more autonomous arc, so to speak, and I really hope that he'll focus more on the plot of the show when it's "uncancelled". Not to mention that season 4, being so vastly different from the other seasons, will provide a lot of material to work with.

Also, as others mentioned above, I'm definitely very happy with the Season 0 project.

[identity profile] easilyentranced.livejournal.com 2012-02-12 11:19 am (UTC)(link)
It's a bummer that you don't like what he's doing with TAS, but to blame your lack of enjoyment on his failed marriage is probably the most ridiculous thing I've ever read. Of course that relationship changed him, but it's not like it ruined him. (In fact, he seems to be doing awesome right now.) If all his jokes were about failed relationships or directly related to that event in his life, then I could possible understand what you're saying. But really TAS is different because LK's been making it for like five years. He's changed, his ideas have changed and his sense of humor has probably changed. Anything is going to change after that length of time, especially when it's made for fun and not on any kind of set schedule.

It's ridiculous opinions/theories like this that really bum me out. Fans like this know a bit about Martin's personal life, but don't seem to give a shit about how it effected him as a person. They only care how it effected their precious comedy show that they watch on the internet. I mean, shit, if you know he went through a rough spot in his life, shouldn't you be more sympathetic and less entitled?

(Also, *insert fart joke* is already pretty prevalent in his Naruto Spoof series, so I wouldn't worry about that appearing in YGOTAS.)

"I mean, shit, if you know he went through a rough spot in his life, shouldn't you be more sympathetic and less entitled?"

I know it's a bit late, but I just wanted to say THIS.

This secret made me feel all kinds of icky, I'm not gonna lie.
