I think fandom on Tumblr has its purposes, just like fandom on LJ has its purposes. I mean, if I want images I'll go to Tumblr, but I really don't think it's good for the sense of community on LJ. Though that IS debatable, since I know my sister's met a lot of friends on Tumblr. They're just different.

tumblr is the only place i ever felt part of a community and made fandom friends. different strokes for different folks. ;) i think because it makes indirect conversation easy, so breaking the isn't that hard.

This. Tumblr has pretty pics, but it seems to be all over the place. It's too frantic for my taste, reading fics there is a pain in the ass and there's no sense of community or a comfortable way to talk with people.

The problem I personally have with Tumblr - my fandoms tend to be RPS fandoms these days, and generally on LJ I've found that those involved have mostly had a good amount of common sense when it comes to locking everything, keeping slash in the communities, keeping it on a need-to-know basis/under Fight Club rules.

AND THEN! I go to Tumblr and see people happily and publically posting "OMG I'D LOVE TO SEE (X) FUCKING (Y)!!1!11! /100 pictures and sparkly gifs" and all these sorts of things and I feel like running around flapping my arms "oh my god guys these people you're posting about, they have the internet, they can use Google, do you not want to NOT POST ABOUT THIS IN PUBLIC?!?!?!"

...but with Tumblr there's no alternative (well, I think you can have password-locked Tumblrs? I don't know anybody who does though) and the general culture there seems to be (young!) teenagers with overshare posting constant pictures of their daily life, and it just... freaks me out, I guess. I'd never post that much about myself (real name, pictures of face/surroundings/friends/school/etc) under friends-lock, let alone in public, but... that just seems to be how Tumblr is...
