Most fandom on tumblr seems to be all about pic spams and gifs. For me, it's like a party post. I love it.

I don't use my tumblr often, but I do stalk some tags. It seems great for sharing art, gifs and other images, but I've seen some rather... unsavoury fandom comments, too. Though it might depend on what fandom you're in. And I admit I'll never understand how people have conversations on there.

[identity profile] helizi.livejournal.com 2012-02-11 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't figured out tumblr yet. I know I should, but even trying to navigate it frustrates me no end.

It's difficult to have convos, but fun for sharing pics etc.

I've also seen some really stupid drama, but that can happen anywhere.

[identity profile] writerserenyty.livejournal.com 2012-02-11 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I think fandom on Tumblr has its purposes, just like fandom on LJ has its purposes. I mean, if I want images I'll go to Tumblr, but I really don't think it's good for the sense of community on LJ. Though that IS debatable, since I know my sister's met a lot of friends on Tumblr. They're just different.

/sort of related

Tumblr makes me really glad I'm not a fanartist or artist, because everybody reblogs and nobody credits these people. It just seems really rude to me that no one ever tells the artists/leaves comments/gives them page views, especially if they're excellent enough to be shared. I'll probably never get over this, and so I doubt I'll ever get a tumblr account myself.

what i dislike about tumblr is that 75% of the content is just reblogging. how lazy is that? come up with your own content instead of just sharing someone elses, you lazy, unoriginal fucks!

i can understand that. i mean, i have a tumblr, i'm on it frequently, but at the same time it sometimes makes me feel very lonely because i don't really have any interaction with anyone outside for reblogging and whatnot. somebody on F!S described tumblr like throwing a frisbee and seeing if somebody will catch it and pass it on (or something like that, it was a while ago) and the metaphor really does fit. /tl;dc

I love tumbler because it's about the only place I've found where there are people just as crazy about Last Exile as I am.

[identity profile] viserys.livejournal.com 2012-02-11 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I use Tumblr often, and I enjoy it, but even I find a lot of the fandom environments there to be hugely unpleasant. I have to avoid any large fandom groups, or I'm just blown away by how they behave towards each other, haha. I think most of the ones I'm involved in, anyway, can basically be summed up with:

Image

[identity profile] fauxkaren.livejournal.com 2012-02-11 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Tumblr is what you make of it. There are a lot of idiots on there, but there are some great people too. The format isn't the most conducive to conversations, but it's a good resource for pretty graphics.

[identity profile] elysian-stars.livejournal.com 2012-02-11 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
People on Tumblr can be...disagreeable sometimes, but fortunately it's the easiest thing in the world to block someone. So I just have a massive block list and carry on my merry way. I do wish it was easier to have conversations with the cool people, though.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-11 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah...I've found the fandom there to be batshit and there is no real way to directly interact with others...only redeeming quality is being able to communicate with gifs.

[identity profile] unicornherds.livejournal.com 2012-02-11 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Tumblr just confuses me. There's no dialogue or conversation going on, it's just re-blogging. I don't understand how people interact on it.

Eh, I like tumblr, but I don't really use it for fandom that much. I follow fandom-y blogs, but it's not a very good way to interact with people. Mostly I follow people I know (breaking the *~*~*~rules of tumblr~*~*~* like a boss) and talk about my many, many feelings. But as for fandom stuff, I feel like tumblr's a lot more positive? Idk, as I said, I'm not too involved with the fandom side of things over there.

[identity profile] cloud-riven.livejournal.com 2012-02-11 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I like the site, but that's more to do with how I use it and who I choose to follow and respond to. A lot of the fandom sections amount to shitty facebookish posts, and negative hiveminds. This is why I don't bother looking over posts that look anything somewhat personal or full of emotional baggage. But there's also a lot of sections that are just so darn friendly and pic spammy. It's like an instant hug group C:

I'm pretty picky about where I wander around there, so I tend to run into happy parties more often than delusional assholes.

[identity profile] poisontea.livejournal.com 2012-02-11 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Tumblr is exactly what you make of it, OP. You don't "lurk" there. You follow specific tumblrs, which then show up on your dash. If they reblog someone, you might find other tumblrs to follow, too! If one of them says something you can't stand, you unfollow or even block them. It is exactly like Livejournal and having a friends list; no one gets on your friends list without your permission, and if you need/want to remove them, you can. The only difference is that you reblog things and add your comments, or send Asks, rather than just commenting directly to them to have a conversation (most of the time).

[identity profile] micromyni.livejournal.com 2012-02-11 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
This was basically my one experiment with tumblr, only I ended up dropping it after four or five days. I just couldn't get the way they communicated; nobody wanted to have discussions, they'd respond to everything with a short sentence, a couple words, or a picture I'd have trouble interpreting the tone of.

[identity profile] streetcake.livejournal.com 2012-02-12 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
Oh man, I hate it when the largest part of fandom is on tumblr. I could've made this secret. It's hard, but the best thing to do is avoid any 'confession/secret' blogs and any posts with text and just stick to picture posts.

[identity profile] solira21.livejournal.com 2012-02-12 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
Personally, I love fandom on tumblr. I've made some awesome friends there, and even though we don't communicate 100% via tumblr, we still see each other there. But it's stupid to assume that a) you will immediately like what you see, or even feel comfortable after a few weeks or that b) there isn't going to be the same amount of stupid shit there is on other sites.

The thing about tumblr is that, unlike deviantart or livejournal, it's all RIGHT THERE IN FRONT OF YOU because of the way the dashboard is structured. If you looked at someone's deviantart or LJ page, you'd have to scroll down and see all of their comments and journals to see if there was drama going on. On tumblr the posting and reblogging works by displaying one user's content and then also displaying the content of all the other users you're following or viewing in a tag.

Tumblr fandom is kind of like high school, actually. You make awesome friends, yet most people there are idiots- although you can learn to avoid them.

[identity profile] oflittlebrain.livejournal.com 2012-02-12 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
i think fandom experiences can vary a lot. especially if you're in a huge fandom like, say, homestuck. speaking of HS, in my experience the fandom has been (for the most part) very friendly on tumblr. and there are some very, very unfriendly places out there. (namely i'm thinking of skaianet, which routinely grosses me out.)

(Anonymous) 2012-02-12 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
Meh. The main part of fandom I'm interested in seems to mostly be inhabited by people who are, in all honesty, jackasses in the fandoms I'm involved in. So I just have no reason to go there. -shrugs- If you don't like, you don't like it. There's nothing saying you have to have anything to do with tumblr fandom.
