I both agree and don't. On the one hand, authors should consider their fans, the way anyone who creates anything has to consider their market. But on the other hand, fanfiction is not the same as producing a book that is published then removed from the market; most fanfiction is for fun, for stress relief, for amusement, and the fans are just a perk of being good at it. The people who remove their works and leave fandom always have their reasons, whether or not they share them, and it's their hobby. They get the final decision, not us.

(Leaving without saying anything, even to fandom friends, is rude though.)

IA. Authors can do whatever they want, but to not consider their fans in any way is kind of horrible. If you're gonna leave, then leave. But at least have the decency to let us know you're leaving. :(

For all you know your favorite fanfic author had a loved one die or was the victim of a violent crime, and you're going to get moody because they didn't notify you on Livejournal first? Really?

For fuck's sake. Telling your friends that you're leaving is polite, barring the idea that one of your friends is the problem. It's not an obligation or a requirement, the same way it's not necessary to hold the door for someone when their hands are full. Anyone can choose not to do it; I just choose to think they're being a bit of a dick if they make that choice.

da: Why the hell would you consider every single person who reads one of your fics a friend? I have my circle of friends online. It's about 10 people. I can guarantee a lot more than them have read the shit I read, and the day I delete my fics, they're the only ones I'd tell (and they'd likely not care). I'm not going to notify a bunch of people I don't even know out of some concept that I owe them something, or even because it'd be ~dickish~ not to. They're my fics, and you're not my friends just because you read them.
