Why are you "distributing" their work instead of just linking back to where it was written? And if they left and took their fic off the net, then maybe you should take the hint that they don't want people seeing it anymore.

aw

as sad as I am when a well-loved story gets deleted out of nowhere, this secret does read as pretty entitled. They may have put it out there for the fan-community to enjoy, but unless it's part of an exchange or a request or something, fic writers are pretty much writing for themselves. They don't owe it to us. (Though yeah, once it's out there, some warning that you're about to delete everything IS really really nice, so we can save it as a document or something. NO PRESSURE, IT'S JUST THAT SOMETIMES YOUR WORK IS REALLY AWESOME AND WE GET ATTACHED TO ITTTTT)

(but again, barring an exchange or a request type deal, it's generally not FOR US. It's personal.)

[identity profile] schizophrenic0.livejournal.com 2012-02-11 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure what you mean by distributing their work? Do you mean linking someone to the story? Or do you mean taking it upon yourself to upload the story somewhere else? If it's the latter, I can see why they wouldn't want you to. It's not your work.

And yes, it sucks when a writer ups and leaves, but that's life. Things happen.

...Seriously? SERIOUSLY? I mean, are you kidding me? You reek of entitlement right now, you do realize that, don't you? I'm a fanfiction author. I write for myself. I write for my mother. I do not write for you. I seriously hope this is a TROLL IN THE DUNGEON type situation, because you are really not painting yourself in a good light.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-11 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I got to the second paragraph of your secret and cracked up laughing. More acurately, I snorted with laughter.

I'm sorry. Was this not your intention?

[identity profile] omorka.livejournal.com 2012-02-11 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Holy entitlement issues, Batman!

While I agree that it's only good manners to warn your readers/watchers before you remove something (whether it's a single work or their entire portfolio), it's a matter of etiquette, not of owing someone anything. The writer put it up for free, and they can do what they wish with it.

I honestly agree with this secret, and I write a fair amount of fanfiction. Then again, a major reason I write is because I want people to enjoy it - I'm not just writing for myself.

Sure, the author has the right, but it seems like a dickish thing to do. I leave crappy fanfics I wrote in middle school up and every now and then someone favorites one of them, and I've seen too many genuinely amazing fics disappear from the web this way.

(Sharing I'm a lot more iffy on. I'm okay with credit and notification, and I love being recced in places, but outright posting to other sites while it's still up in its original location seems a bit skeevy to me.)

I write fic and since I write it for fun, I really don't care what people do with it in fandom. It's not like the characters or shows are mine in the first place, so I'm not going to freak out if someone trades my stories over email or changes my icons or something.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-11 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)

...Well I can't speak for fanfic authors in general, but personally? I write for myself. If other people like my work then that's a huge bonus, but it's still a bonus rather than my sole motivation. Around half of my completed fics are never posted anywhere, since they're for small, inactive fandoms and wouldn't get any attention. I wrote them because I enjoyed writing them, not because I expected someone else to enjoy reading them.

As for authors deleting fics, that's why I have a memory stick with all my favourite pieces of writing and art backed up (and there have been many occasions when I've been glad of it). I think that's the only thing you can do, really.

Fanfic writers can do whatever the hell they want with their fics because, guess what, it's theirs. They wrote it. You don't have any type of rights to it, even if you think it was 'written for you'.

I wish so called fans would have more consideration for the people who provide them with something they enjoy, for free, and end up having to put up with this type of undeserved entitlement because of it.

I both agree and don't. On the one hand, authors should consider their fans, the way anyone who creates anything has to consider their market. But on the other hand, fanfiction is not the same as producing a book that is published then removed from the market; most fanfiction is for fun, for stress relief, for amusement, and the fans are just a perk of being good at it. The people who remove their works and leave fandom always have their reasons, whether or not they share them, and it's their hobby. They get the final decision, not us.

(Leaving without saying anything, even to fandom friends, is rude though.)

woooow what.

Fanfic writers write fanfic because they want to. And if they have reasons to stop writing, those are their reasons.

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2012-02-11 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
You do come off as really entitled and a bit douchey in this, but I kind of empathize. There's this fanfic author who was really my entrance into the idea of fanfic, and shipping, and they wrote a ship I enjoyed very much, and it was my first and favorite ship, but then the website where they originally posted it went down.

So, I migrated to ff.net to find my favorite ship, and there the same author was again! With their fics! Yay!

Only then they deleted all of their fics from ff.net, and left. ;_;

So then years (literally) later I'm looking for different fics from a different fandom, and this one author sounds familiar, so I start reading their fics.

And it's the author from the website that went down, and ff.net where they deleted their stories. And they have the stories I was missing! Yay!

(Until they took their stories for that fandom offline, and the website went down.)

So, yes, I empathize.

You still sound entitled, though.

You do realize that even a professional author who you have given money to is still allowed to "up and leave" and stop writing. And if you redistributed a published work by making unauthorized copies, that's (technically) illegal. You say you should be allowed to behave this way even if you pay for writing. You are not allowed to behave this way EVEN IF YOU DO PAY FOR IT.

You think people shouldn't leave fandom without warning? What if they went to college? You'd rather they neglect their education so you get new fic? What if your favorite fanfic author had a baby and took a break from fandom? You think you're more important than their child? If a fanfic author has a medical emergency, do they then get bombarded with e-mail from you saying, "You write fanfic for ME, the fan"?

Maybe the reason you're getting "based for being a horrible, selfish person" is because YOU ARE A HORRIBLE, SELFISH PERSON.

I ain't gonna lie; I agree, OP. I can't even count the number of times a fave author of mine just jumped ship without so much as a mention! It's even worse when you're actually friends with the author and they just delete their journal without even saying anything. >:(

I know I'm gonna get a shitload of wank for sayin' this, but I don't think it's "entitlement" for putting your trust into an author you've invested in and supported, and hoping they don't take away the things you supported/encouraged them for. It's entitlement for thinking their fics belong to you, but it ain't for being upset that they took it down.

I used to draw a helluva lot of fanwork for this author in the HP fandom and the woman honest to gosh abandoned the fandom and took all of her fics with her without telling anyone. I'd had thought we were friends of sorts but guess not. I felt like serious shit when I found out from someone else that she deleted her journal without letting anyone know why. Or know, period. Friends just don't do that. People with a fanbase just don't do that, period.

OP, you probably SHOULD have worded your argument differently 'cause ya do come across as rude, but I agree with the sentiment behind it. Authors have a right to do whatever the fuck they want with their shit, but that doesn't make their hardcore fans left in the dust feel any less dejected and disappointed.

*waits for the arguments*

Entitlement issues, ahoy! Because it's not like authors have opinions or lives or free wil or anything.

[identity profile] sarolynne.livejournal.com 2012-02-11 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Most of the time, when people say that it's not like the author is getting paid they don't mean that money is a more valid contribution. What they mean is writing fanfic is not their damn job. They write what they write for pleasure, and if it stops being fun, there's not much reason to continue.

Getting a guilt trip from some entitled brat doesn't make it more fun either.

Does it suck when a story you were enjoying isn't finished? Yes. But that's the danger of reading works that are published serially instead of completed. You run the same chance if you buy a book that's the first in a series. If there's not enough action on the first novel, the others might not be published, or the author might be distracted by another work. The only real difference is that professionally published works is that professional stuff is distributed in a more completed state. If it really bugs you that much, check to see if stories are finished before you start reading them.

[identity profile] yunho.livejournal.com 2012-02-11 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
as a fanfic author: no. just no to everything you said.

no one is forcing you to leave that <100 word comment just like no one forced me to write that fic. stop thinking people write for you. they don't. even request fics are written for one specific person; not because the author thought, hmm i need to write something for all my fans because i owe it to them.

newsflash: authors don't owe you jack. we have the right to do whatever we want with our fics. WE wrote it. not you.
