(Anonymous) 2012-02-12 08:40 am (UTC)(link)Ethics aside, however, in purely pragmatic terms, if they didn't want it distributed they shouldn't have put it on the internet on the first place; nobody has a reasonable expectation of keeping control of anything once it's uploaded for general consumption. Most people with internet access in this day and age should be aware of this fact, and they may choose to ignore it at their peril.
Now, in the interests of avoiding unnecessary drama, it'd be fairly inadvisable to upload something publically against the author's express wishes. (Everything I said above notwithstanding, it really wouldn't be the nicest thing to do either. There's what one is morally obligated to do and then there's what is courteous, and the two don't always perfectly align.) But sharing something privately that you kept a copy of, or making available a work whose author can't be reached and never made their preferences known? I say go for it.
