It's been about two years since I've written fanfiction (I'm working on original works now), but I enjoyed my relationship with my readers. And I do feel that I have some obligation to them (particularly the ones who wrote to me frequently). They were investing their time in reading my works, and most of them were very polite and thoughtful. I never minded replying if someone asked about an update.

If for some reason I ever feel I should remove all my fanworks, I would let them know in advance in case someone wanted to save it.

I think this author in particular handled matters very professionally and considerately when she went pro and decided to remove her stories. She gave everyone advanced notice to save her files (put up in a zip) before they were removed. http://sarahtales.livejournal.com/

I of course speak only for myself, but I do feel there is a connection between an author and her readers, and a certain personal obligation.

But no, entitlement is not sexy. The author-reader relationship I'm describing is more like among friends, rather than demanding "consumers" and a "producer."

I think the author reader relationship differs from person to person, some people have it and some people don't.

I agree with you completely.

yes. save them to your files.

don't fucking distribute them across the fucking internet.

the author had to remove them for a REASON. it's disrespectful to go against their reasons after that.

My personal ethics is this: if a friend wanted the saved files, I'd e-mail them. Certainly would never repost anything without permission.

Hi "IT'S DISRESPECTFUL!" anon.

What if someone at your (conservative government) job found your NC17 fic? Would you take the time to give everyone advance notice and end up unemployed? Or would you just delete everything and save your career? Are your online fans more important than paying rent for you and your kids?

That's pretty much a worse-case scenario, and obviously the author has to take care of herself first.

It is kind of sad when everything connected to an author just disappears without a reason. Then you have to wonder if the person just had a fit of artistic rage (I hate all my work!), got in a petty fight, or is actually involved in a worst-case scenario.
