Just because I feel that authors of fanfiction have the rights to abandon their fanfic doesn't make me pretentious. I do agree that the not-sharing thing makes no sense. It may be an old shame to you, but people still enjoy it, yanno? But you DO sound like an entitled reader who thinks the authors owe you something because you like their works, not gonna lie.

I think part of the 'no sharing' thing is that someone is out there, passing out something they worked hard on, without permission. Plus the author took it down for a *reason* - be it that they felt ashamed of it, or because it's causing real life problems for them...and continuing to pass something that they no longer want out there is, in all honesty, pretty disrespectful.

Is it disrespectful only if they pass it around? What about those that keep it to themselves? Are they still disrespectful because they didn't just let the work fade into oblivion? Also, I'm reminded of some famous artists that disliked their early work and sold them off to whoever would take them. Are museums that display those pieces disrespectful?

Different anon--

I don't think it's disrespectful to keep a saved file to yourself, unless you know the know the author personally and they've asked you to delete it. Otherwise, you've got it, you've read it, damage done. Distributing it against their will OTOH, even on an email at personal request basis, absolutely crosses the line. If the author absolutely doesn't want anybody to read it who hasn't before and/or who didn't take the time to save their own copy when it was freely available, that request should be respected.

In the case of the artist, they chose to sell the work rather than destroy it. The new owner possessed the rights to it from that point on. A good curator will make it clear to the visitors what the artist thought of the work along with historical and current critical opinion.

If an author just disappeared one day and took all their fics/art with them without leaving any last request or wishes, I would not post it online for public viewing, but if someone who read the fic before it was taken down didn't manage to save it, I would give it to them. This no doubt brands me as a horrible person, but if I thought my friend would enjoy a saved fic that had been taken down I wouldn't hesitate to email it to them. That alone is disrespectful in your opinion, but I believe that the most disrespectful thing I could do is re-post it on the internet again, which I have never and will never do.

Ah, I get your point. Artist/fanfic author similie invalid.

What you're describing wouldn't be disrespectful to me at all. Without a final request I would PM someone a copy if they asked me to whether they'd read it or not--although like you, I wouldn't post it publicly and would request that my recipient refrain as well.

It's only if someone specifically asks that a fic never be shared again, in any way, I figure that AFAIK they have a good reason to feel that way. I've heard some pretty bad horror stories and wouldn't want to contribute to a potential real-life problem.

Yeah, your mentality might have been the same as those who stole my sketch book from my backpack and passed it around the entire class when I made it explicitly clear that I DID NOT wanted to share it.

I don't give a shit if it gave them "enjoyment." If I made something and I did not want it to be shared, then don't share it. Not rocket science.

There's a difference between physical private property such as a sketchbook and putting your work up on the internet for all to see.
