Some people delete work because it's causing them real world problems of some sort, or has the potential to do so. Perhaps a family member, employer, or crazy stalker found their fic. Perhaps an ex spouse is using said fic as leverage in a child custody dispute. Perhaps they're in danger of losing their job. Perhaps they have a chance to be published and their agent told them to delete that stuff.

On the other hand, perhaps they've "grown out" of fandom and are just cleaning up their "embarrassing" old writing. But since you don't know, the polite response is to keep those saved fics to yourself. However, you are perfectly entitled to feel emotions regarding the event, even pissy entitlement. Fandom doesn't get to be the thought police.
