I don't really...get this. I pretty much understand quadrants within the context of Homestuck, but it's baffling to think of the categories applied in real life. Can't you just talk your feelings over with this person like a rational human being instead of trying to stick fictional labels on your interactions?

Well the conciliatory quadrants are pretty common to see, it's just that we don't identify them as romantic relationships and don't really have any reason to...so yeah it's still stupid to label these things.

Translated out of Hamsteak, OP (I presume) has a significant other and a best friend. OP has romantic feelings for both, but doesn't want to lose the significant other or to have to cut back on the closeness with the best friend. Therefore, OP is defining them as two different but very equal relationships- the one with the significant other is a traditional romantic relationship, the one with the best friend is super intense and full of love and sharing, but completely platonic. However, OP and the best friend still are romantically attracted to each other, and the closeness they have could be considered emotional infidelity.

I'm not the OP, so I could be getting some of the details wrong.

Quadrants is kind of weird. But I don't think that putting labels on things is the problem. I mean, if you're monogamous (and I'm saying this as someone who is), you already are saying "this relationship is one thing, this other one is a completely different thing that's nothing like it." The problem wasn't having this friendship and labelling it as a special friendship, the problem was that special friendship wasn't what either of them really wanted. They want to date, and by having this special friendship they're enabling each other to have a kind of intimacy that crosses lines even if it's all theoretically platonic. People have gotten themselves into this situation without labelling their relationships in any strange way.
