It really felt like it was a movie script just fleshed out--very heavy on visuals, not leaving much in the way of imagination.

Then comes the problematic aspects of it; District Eleven comes off as feeling very prison-slash-slavelike, with Rue's family being described as "little black birds", and the guards dressed in white... Katniss being 'feminist' only by not shaving her legs while all of her political opinions are given to her by men... the entire series would be twelve pages long if Katniss would stop thinking about who she likes more...

I think everything about District 11 was supposed to be a straight-up allusion to American slavery, though. It was clearly intentional.

Also, I don't remember Katniss's hairy legs being held up as some kind of badge of feminism? I thought the point (if there was even supposed to be one) was the contrast between her world and the vanity of the Capitol.

Same anon--a lot of people interpret that as a badge of feminism though, and it's just... an incorrect interpretation. (I know, I know, it's subjective, but it's a cringe-worthy one)

Fair enough. Personally, I think Katniss is a pretty good character from a feminist perspective, not because she considers herself a feminist as such, but because she isn't self-conscious about her traditionally "male" interests and characteristics and doesn't look down on people for having traditionally "female" ones, if that makes sense. I guess not shaving her legs fits in with that, but yeah, I doubt she was doing it as some kind of statement.

I felt like for a large part of the series she did look down on people for having traditionally female interests. She always treated her prep team from the Capitol like they were beneath her for liking their job, and fashion, and parties (I know around the third book she sort of changes, but to me it just went from her thinking they were silly and being exasperated to thinking they were silly and being fond of them instead).

Er, no. She looked down on people who spent all their time thinking about clothes and make-up while she and everyone she had ever known spent their time trying not to get killed or starve to death. So that had nothing to do with feminism. Unless survival is not a "traditionally female interest".

THANK YOU.

so many people say the love triangle had a huge part in the books but i legit didnt notice it much, but ive only read the first 2. like gale is still a complete non-entity to me aside from katniss having a couple of fleeting thoughts about him and ~that scene in catching fire.

OMG Yes. This is how it felt when I read them too! I was trying to tell this to one of my friends who also read the books, and he didn't get it. They feel like book written to be made into movies. Little character development, but big explosions.
