It was okay. It wasn't spectacular or anything, but it was an interesting enough read that I finished the series.

A lot of stans get really overprotective about their fandoms. Though... I feel like Hunger Games inherited a lot of fans from Twilight when SMeyer gushed and highly recommended it to twihards after she read it.

well, there's no accounting for taste. It usually seems that things which are middling in quality and originality end up having the hugest fandoms. At least it's better than Twilight.

Well. The first book or two are. Don't get me started on the absolute trash that is the last novel.

It's a mediocre copy of Battle Royale and that movie wasn't even good.

It really felt like it was a movie script just fleshed out--very heavy on visuals, not leaving much in the way of imagination.

Then comes the problematic aspects of it; District Eleven comes off as feeling very prison-slash-slavelike, with Rue's family being described as "little black birds", and the guards dressed in white... Katniss being 'feminist' only by not shaving her legs while all of her political opinions are given to her by men... the entire series would be twelve pages long if Katniss would stop thinking about who she likes more...

I love it, but it hits pretty much every single trope I love. Plus, my S.O. and I kind of bonded over it and got introduced to it together, so I have fuzzy feelings about it because I associate it with "us." I do think a lot of the concepts are pretty original (and no, I'm not talking about Battle Royale), though. The meta potential sucks me in like nothing else, but now we're back to the tropes I like.

[identity profile] shukivengeance.livejournal.com 2012-02-16 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not a fan either, and it's fine to not like things, but instead of feeling the need to proclaim to the series' fans about how much you don't like it, how about you just... not? Let them have their fun.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-16 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's just okay :/. It kind of reminds me of when Inception came out. Everyone freaked out about how original and awesome and mindtrippy it is, but it's basically a carbon copy of a ton of other movies. It should be called Western Paprika.

[identity profile] la-petite-singe.livejournal.com 2012-02-16 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
I liked it, but I didn't love it, and I didn't at all feel the need to jump into the fandom. I'm just gonna read the books and see the movies and that's kinda it. It's a weird feeling, really. I was like 'is this how normal people feel when they read books?!'

[identity profile] van.livejournal.com 2012-02-16 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
I agree. Although what tended to bother me the most was the writing style. I just thought it was unnecessarily full of fragments and poor quality. I get it's Katniss's POV and I totally think fragments later on when she's fighting for her life and not thinking properly would work, but when the book opens there's no reason for it, unless to perhaps show how uneducated Katniss is, but she doesn't seem to be particularly uneducated so. It was just really distracting.

I thought it an okay book, but the rabid fans surrounding it surprise me. But then again, most massive fandoms are surprising, and I guess even in myself I find I don't get fannish about genuinely AMAZING works. It's the bad ones I want to "fix" and play in. The really excellent ones are perfect as-is so I don't need to dabble in them. (There are, of course, exceptions, but it makes sense to me with regards to this fandom.)

[identity profile] lesliecrusher.livejournal.com 2012-02-16 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
I really hate the idea that just because you disagree over a fandom that one person has to be "right" or "wrong". To each their own.

[identity profile] lit-wolf.livejournal.com 2012-02-16 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
I fell completely in love with the series but I wouldn't bash/attack someone over liking it. I've heard a lot of differing opinions about the series and I respect all of them. As long as you don't look down on me for liking Hunger Games, I won't look down on you for disliking it.

And I'm happy you at least gave it shot, rather than some people who read a summary and then jump on the hate band-wagon because it's the 'cool' thing to do.

I'm also very sorry you were berated by fans for disliking it.

[identity profile] barnabys-bane.livejournal.com 2012-02-16 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
I couldn't bring myself to read this book/series because I paged through the first one and found the narrator irritating. I'm not fond of first person POV in general, so I'll admit that it didn't have a very large chance of winning me over in the first place.

sigh.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-16 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
I liked the first one well enough, though I didn't think it was brilliant and I kind of have to side-eye whoever first suggested this story should be a trilogy.

But ultimately, you know what? It got a whole bunch of kids to read. Some of these kids will move on to reading other books, and if a book makes you start reading, I don't care what book that is, because it got you to read. That, in my opinion, is the important thing.

Agreed, OP. I mean I got through the first book and I'll watch the movie (I actually think the movie has the potential to be good, because it'll be rid of the honestly god-awful prose), but I have no need to finish the rest of the series. I really do not understand the fervor people have for it, and arguing that it's better than Twilight? Ehhhhh.

I admit I am a huge Hunger Games fan, and i'm usually the very last person to go near anything YA. I grew up mainlining Shakespeare and Tolkien.

But from my own feelings on it, and those of other friends of mine who are into it, it really isn't about the BOOKS at all for some people. The books are horribly poorly written. Low quality, simplistic, repetitive. Really not very decent prose whatsoever.

But the WORLD the Hunger Games is set in is a huge draw - this dystopian future theme and the world around it. So many people I know love the world and LOVE the secondary characters (Haymitch, FINNICK, and Johanna), but aren't bothered at all about the main three or any of that.

It probably helped me get into it that when I first read it, i'd literally just been wheeled out of surgery and was on a cocktail of morphine and other drugs. If I hadn't been drugged up to my eyeballs, i'd probably have read the first few pages, been put off and disgusted by the shoddy attempt at 'writing' and not carried on.

Read the first book, couldn't be bothered with the other two. :| I can't figure out if I hate Katniss for being dull or if I just hate the writing style that, thanks to being in first person, makes Katniss an insufferably dull character.

I liked it fine. Didn't love it like a lot of people seem to, but I definitely thought it had enough going for it to make me TEAR through them all in like three days

[identity profile] kamikazemusume.livejournal.com 2012-02-16 07:38 am (UTC)(link)
I tried to get through the first book and honestly could not finish it, even after saying to myself "well... maybe it gets better?". There were just too many things in it that reminded me of books I'd already read (e.g. Battle Royale) that had similar themes and tropes.

That said, I won't begrudge anyone for liking it as long as they respect my right to NOT like it.

Seems like mediocre YA is the standard now. :(

I also feel cheated out of an Animorphs feature film, it's like we missed the window Harry Potter opened up by about 10-15 years.
