I liked the first one well enough, though I didn't think it was brilliant and I kind of have to side-eye whoever first suggested this story should be a trilogy.

But ultimately, you know what? It got a whole bunch of kids to read. Some of these kids will move on to reading other books, and if a book makes you start reading, I don't care what book that is, because it got you to read. That, in my opinion, is the important thing.

This attitude annoys me. It's like saying at least feeding a baby a KFC double down is feeding it.

Yes, but if it was a stark choice between starvation and KFC then the latter is more desirable. When it comes to reading, trashy YA novels are preferable by far to kids refusing to voluntarily read anything. Regular reading facilitates adult literacy, even if the novels in question are not all that artistically meritorious. I've met too many adults who struggle with basic reading/writing tasks to value purity over pragmatism.
