Would it help to know that in the book he barely felt anything at her death, and in fact tore Cossette's letter out of her hands to read it almost before she was dead? The musical made so much more out of that than there actually was.

Totally what I was thinking, but given how distressed OP seemed I didn't want to point it out because I thought it might make it worse. IA that it's a stretch to say that even musical!Marius had romantic feelings for Eponine, but hey, if that makes OP feel better I say go on thinking it. I do remember my fourteen-year-old self being pissed off at Marius for how callous he was in the book when she died, though, especially after I'd seen the musical first.

I was thinking the same thing. I liked Eponine way more than Cossette in the book simply because she was more aware of what was going on in her country and was part of a movement to change it. Cossette in the book seemed too much like a clueless princess. That's why I was annoyed at Marius' behavior because to me it felt like he chose looks over courage.

I mean, Eponine in the book didn't have any interest in what went on around her - she was a thief, a prostitute, and mostly hung around Marius because she was obsessed with him. She had no interest in Enjolras' movement short of luring Marius there to die with her in a very "If I can't have him no one will!" - and Marius really wasn't there for the "movement" either, he just wanted to commit woeful-Romeoesque-suicide-by-barricade - and Cosette never cared about the whole thing. She was so naive that she didn't understand why Marius was uncomfortable taking Valjean's money, because no one felt that she ought to be told why there was ever a complication. The only people involved in the movement were Les Amis, and that's why the scene of their death is so poignant. I can see caring about Eponine's death as part of Marius' storyline, or even her own, but as part of the ABC one...? *deeply confused*

(I'm really sincerely confused, actually, not trying to make fun or anything - please explain! Especially about a sequel...)
