I actually really like this idea. Instead of ignoring the word, turn it into something positive. That way, you take the power away from the people who try to use it to hurt you. As much as people bitch about 4chan, it's an awesome place to go where no one really gets offended. We're all anons (except for the tripfags of course), so words lose their meaning.

Except the words don't lose their meaning when you use them as slurs. They just gain a new one, built on the previous definitions. So now "fag" doesn't just mean "gay person", but it also means "stupid/ugly/ignorant person, just like a gay person".

DA. You just demonstrated how a traditionally polite and unoffensive word - young - can be used as an insult. Youngsters today learn early on that it is unacceptable to discriminate or bash others based on their sexual orientation or identity. The bashing should be condemned. However, languages evolve. The usage of words change over time, and "fag" is just one example of this phenomenon. Individual words are neutral. It's the idea you convey that matters. Keep up with the times and stop drawing a line between "good" and "bad" words.

I will concede to the fact that some people may use it in a positive way.



But you CANNOT say that is is not at all an offensive word. It can certainly easily be used offensively, and most of the time it is used, it is.

Some people are never going to be able to hear it without being offended. And right now, I would be that is the majority of people who it could be used against/has been used against (since it's not just gay men who get it thrown at them). Until most of the people who would be genuinely hurt by it being used, or genuinely offended, then you cannot say that it is not an offensive word, even if it is starting to be used positively by some.

tl;dr Words can mean multiple things. Being one thing doesn't rule out the other. And you really need to take into consideration with this particular word? That it is still being used to hurt people. It is offensive pisses me the fuck off to me that you say it is not an offensive word.

My apologies, I should clarify. I do not find the word offensive, but that's not to say that I don't realise that other people do and I do not use the word in everyday conversation.

But with regard to the secret, I see no reason why I should not use it in a place where it has entirely different context. Really, anyone going to /b/ without foreknowledge of what it is like is probably going to be offended by everything, not just the use of one particular term.

Who said it had to gain a new offensive meaning? Did I say that? No I did not. I was speaking hypothetically, and I was not just referring to the term "fag", but slurs in general. And you obviously cannot blanket this idea over all slurs, because there are many slurs, or just words in general, whose meaning has completely changed over the years, sometimes for the better.
