I'm proud to call myself a faggot and a fag, even if other homosexuals/homoromantics don't feel the same way. I'm not gonna' force the idea of "taking back the word faggot" on other queers, but I love taking it back for myself.

I kind of agree. Sometimes you can find real affection in the name calling ("I love you faggots", "you guys are faggots but you're my faggots", etc); and "fag" as a suffix meaning "fan of" and others has now spread outside of 4chan too.

I actually really like this idea. Instead of ignoring the word, turn it into something positive. That way, you take the power away from the people who try to use it to hurt you. As much as people bitch about 4chan, it's an awesome place to go where no one really gets offended. We're all anons (except for the tripfags of course), so words lose their meaning.

I always thought it was supposed to be derogatory; for ex. that calling someone a ponyfag = really obsessed MLP fan that had no life out of their fandom (MLP otaku in the Japanese meaning of otaku no what fandom has made it into).

I think this actually works pretty well within the context of 4chan, for many of the reasons you describe.

Believe me, I am fully aware that there are a large number of words which have meanings rooted in historic inequality, discrimination and worse, and I am not convinced that they can be succesfully reclaimed as a general rule. At the same time, emotionally, I am much more satisfied by words gaining different (positive) meanings than I am by repeatedly pointing out the negative connotations and offensive nature of that word.

It's because of 4chan I've gotten so comfortable with using "-fag" but then I realize I look like a douche anywhere else online or irl if I used it.

I think it works fine for 4chan and I wouldn't take it away from them or demand that they stop using it since it clearly gained its own connotation in that specific context. However, since 4chan culture is very BY ME, FOR ME I don't think it has or will ever have catch up with mainstream society.

Don't know about anyone else, but I really hate this reclamation of slurs thing that I've seen growing in popularity. If someone calls me a 'nigger' I'm going to punch them in the mouth, no question. It's not a positive thing; turning the connotation of a slur around seems to me to be trying to erase its past, which I'm severely uncomfortable with, so this sort of thing grates on me like nobody's business.

I wish Gen-X and older would come to understand that "fag" is no longer profanity by default but a fresh way to say "guy" or "person". As with practically any noun or non-prohibited weapon you can think of, it is only offensive when used with the intent to offend.

I think it's juvenile. Most of the time the word isn't even nescessary to add to the meaning of whatever they want to convey.

I don't know, I find it passable (not agreeable) just on 4chan just because of the culture of the community interpret it to have a different meaning. Doesn't make it okay IRL in any context, though, even if you refer to yourself. That, and calling people out for it on 4chan is a hilariously bad idea and won't really achieve anything. If you don't like the word Fag, don't use it around people who don't like it being said. If you're around people who understand it in the way of 4chan or whatever.

The thing that pisses me off is when people hold a word in a sacred (can't think of a better word, but someone else put it this way) like manor; to the point to one can say it.It's not the "N word" or the "F word". It's nigger and faggot, I'm not going to act like it's hush hush to use.

In addition to the aforementioned usage of "fag" and "faggot" to refer to kindling, cigarettes, etc, I'd just like to toss in that in the past it's meant many other things as well.

Firstly, there was a system of "fagging" in many boys' schools in Edwardian/Late Victorian English schooling. It was essentially a page system - older boys (fag-masters) at school would have younger boys (fags) as their attendant, and they'd run errands and do favors for them, while the older boys could offer mentorship and discipline and training to the younger boys. Furthermore, in the same era, "fagged" was also synonymous with tired and exhausted. Many soldiers during World War One used this term, and it's been documented in letters and other correspondence. For example, Albert Ball, an English pilot, uses the term here (http://albertball.homestead.com/recollections.html) in the letter excerpts from April 23rd, 1917 and April 29th, 1917.

I'm going to refrain from arguing one way or another in this debacle, but I'd just like to point out the variations in word usage, meaning, and connotation, and how words change in all those regards over time, because it's fascinating to me!

Eh, I'd hardly call it reclaiming because it's usage is so dependent on context and what group of people are using it. I have no problem when someone calls me a fag drawfag, writefag, or whateverfag on those boards because the intent is about identifying hobbies or endearment. They're not necessarily lgbtquilt folk though.

Outside of that, irl, anywhere else on the net that doesn't have similar anon culture, fuck no. I am not okay with it ever because it's practically always used as a slur. I'm not even okay with people identifying me as "that queer person" because it's like I'm just being reduced to some othering factor.

I can understand why a queer person would disagree with the use of the word "fag" for any reason, I really do (and especially if it has been used to bully them in the past). I'm sure many homosexual men and women have been called fags in the past by some asshole who wanted to make them feel bad about their sexuality, and I completely understand them being offended by just the USE of the word.

However, I think it's very inappropriate and somewhat hypocritical for you to be telling other people, particularly other queer people, how they should be identify with the word "fag". I think the gist of the argument on this secret is that it's understandable to be offended by this word, and I don't think anybody would NOT understand that - but it's NOT okay for you to be telling another gay person how THEY should feel about the word and its re-appropriation.

tl;dr, if you are offended, fine. But as a bisexual woman, you have NO right to tell me that -I- have to be offended by it, too. It's NOT your place to be policing other queer people on how they identify with that word.

If I see x-fag used anywhere other than 4chan I just shake my head and instantly can't take that person serious anymore. It's not that I have a particular problem with the use of "fag" but 4channers remind me of the majority of teenagers when grouped together out in public. Loud, obnoxious and rarely say anything worth listening to.
