The term 'bastard' likely lost its sting due to the lessening of importance within the English-speaking world on knowing who one's father is, mostly due to changes in the way property is passed down after death (I'm not an expert on this in any sense, so if I'm wrong, feel free to correct me). I'm not sure how this sort of thing would occur with a slur like 'fag,' though I do suppose it's possible. In any case, I prefer not to use slurs in my speech. I'm not trying to police anyone about it; if you (general) like to reclaim words because you find it empowering, then good for you. I'm just not one of those people.
And as a slight off-shoot, I rather intensely dislike the word 'gyped' (always have, honestly). I was uncomfortable with people using it before I found out its roots.

Until modern times, when like niggardly coming from nigla getting confused with the n-word coming from nègre/negro people make historical assumptions based on nothing. (Now, if someone recovers a piece of ancient writing with 'he was gypsied' which is supposedly the origin of it, I will change my hypothesis accordingly)
