It happens so much in language already though. Like the term "gyped". It was originally a slur against gypsies, but doesn't hold the same connotation today. And as a commenter pointed out earlier, the term "bastard." It's not necessarily a good word, but it's original meaning holds little to know weight. In other words, it really doesn't matter whether you want it's past meaning erased or not, and it doesn't really matter whether erasing it is a good thing. It's probably going to happen with a lot of slurs. It's just how language works. This way, at least, it stops hurting the people it's directed at. That's got to count for something.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-16 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
"Gypped" actually still means "cheated". It's still a racist slur, like "Indian giver".

(Anonymous) 2012-02-16 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, but it's not common knowledge that it pertains to gypsies, or at least that's been my experience with the word. It's not meant to offend anyone, it's just used more as an adjective in slang nowadays.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-16 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
Intent still isn't magic. If you use a racist slur and don't intend for it to be offensive, that doesn't magically make it not offensive. There are a lot of slurs that were used against black folks in the US that aren't widely known anymore by non-black folks, but you'll still get chewed out for using them (and rightly so). Ignorance isn't an excuse.

NA

...yes? I'm not sure what you're trying to accomplish here.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-16 06:42 am (UTC)(link)
The only people keeping it alive are people like you.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-16 07:24 am (UTC)(link)
And all those people being bastards to the Roma, letting them drown while lifeguards watch and so on (http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2008/jul/21/italy.race). Or did you think all the "gypsies" were gone?

(Anonymous) 2012-02-16 02:48 pm (UTC)(link)
don't say bastard

(Anonymous) 2012-02-17 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
Ignorance isn't an excuse. Fucking SJWs bashing people for things over which they have no control, that's always nice. Self-righteous morons.

[identity profile] barnabys-bane.livejournal.com 2012-02-16 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
True, but that doesn't mean I can't dislike and disagree with the practice. It's something I'm uncomfortable with and have a feeling that I always will be.

The term 'bastard' likely lost its sting due to the lessening of importance within the English-speaking world on knowing who one's father is, mostly due to changes in the way property is passed down after death (I'm not an expert on this in any sense, so if I'm wrong, feel free to correct me). I'm not sure how this sort of thing would occur with a slur like 'fag,' though I do suppose it's possible. In any case, I prefer not to use slurs in my speech. I'm not trying to police anyone about it; if you (general) like to reclaim words because you find it empowering, then good for you. I'm just not one of those people.

And as a slight off-shoot, I rather intensely dislike the word 'gyped' (always have, honestly). I was uncomfortable with people using it before I found out its roots.

[identity profile] duae.livejournal.com 2012-02-16 02:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, if it matters, there's no historical proof for it ever being associated with 'gypsy' but strong historical records for 'gyp', which was the old word for vulture.

Until modern times, when like niggardly coming from nigla getting confused with the n-word coming from nègre/negro people make historical assumptions based on nothing. (Now, if someone recovers a piece of ancient writing with 'he was gypsied' which is supposedly the origin of it, I will change my hypothesis accordingly)

[identity profile] barnabys-bane.livejournal.com 2012-02-16 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Interesting. I've never studied linguistics, so I'm nowhere near an expert on the evolution of words and their meanings. It's still not a word I'm comfortable using, but if others want to, whatever. That's their deal.
