I wish Gen-X and older would come to understand that "fag" is no longer profanity by default but a fresh way to say "guy" or "person". As with practically any noun or non-prohibited weapon you can think of, it is only offensive when used with the intent to offend.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-16 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
Because intent is magic!

(Anonymous) 2012-02-16 06:27 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry, but "intent isn't magic" has made it to my list of incredibly grating phrases that asshurt SJ-ers use, along with "check your privilege," "you sound white," and "step on legos."

What I'm trying to say is that YOU ARE FUCKING ANNOYING, and you need to grow a thicker skin.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-16 07:27 am (UTC)(link)
Uh. Pretty sure if your butt aches that hard, you're the one who needs a thicker skin.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-16 02:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but you do sound white. You know that, right?

Right, because none of us under the age of 35 was ever bullied with the word "fag" in school. People totally stopped using it like that in the 90's.

Except where some of us were and sometimes still get "fag" thrown at us derogatorily, so don't you fucking dare act like you speak for me because we're close in age.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-16 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
But anon! If it doesn't bother ME, then you shouldn't complain about it! Because I'm an edgy kid, and the world revolves around my ass.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-16 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
There's an "orbiting around Uranus" joke to be made there, but I'm just too tired to make it work.

it *doesn't* bother the edgy kid, and the world revolves around his ass. <-- this is the bad thing

it *does* bother the sensitive kid, and therefore the world should revolve around his ass. <-- this is the good thing

i say, sir, your double standard is surely a mighty thing.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-16 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
I think you missed the part where anon said "it is only offensive when used with the intent to offend." Of course it's going to offend you if someone says it in a mean-spirited way. That's just common sense. That's what they were trying to say, so calm yo tits.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-16 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
Go google "intent is fucking magic" and educate yourself.

I think you missed the part where intent isn't always obvious, especially on the internet, and also the part where words that have been used in an abusive fashion can still be really jarring and upsetting to someone when directed toward them in a non-abusive or ambiguously abusive context. I mean, shit, fandom gets trauma-related triggers when it comes to fic warnings, but doesn't understand how having the word "fag" thrown at them might be triggering to someone whose experienced bullying over their sexuality?

You're right, it's horrible to throw the word around as an insult. However, have you seen "fag" used in another context? Instead of calling someone else a fag out of the blue, you first use it to address and identify yourself. While you remain anonymous, you let others know that there's a ____fag around - i.e. someone out there doing _______.

I wish children would learn that words don't magically shed their meanings just because the kid in question wants them to mean something else. "Fag" is offensive. The root of the word is offensive, the usage of the word has at least a hundred years of being offensive stuck behind it, and a straight person calling another straight person a fag because they think it's funny is not fresh, or clever, or new. The word is still profanity by default, junior.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-16 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
I can't believe I'm actually touching this topic but...

Didn't the word fag originally mean cigarette?

No more 'chinks in your armor' then. HDU use that word. It's been used by people to oppress my people for centuries.

Seriously: context. Words mean different things in different contexts. I wish kids would learn that. (You included, sweetheart)

(Anonymous) 2012-02-16 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
You've got "guy", "gal", "person", and all sorts of words to mean person so you don't need to say fag to mean person. It doesn't mean person, it's short for faggot, which has been a slur/insult to put down homosexuals for many years even though it's original meaning was small bundle of wood.

Why don't the younger generations substitute nigger for fag then, huh, as a word for person? Is it cause it's more likely they'll have their teeth knocked out. "Oh, (hehe) he's such a ponynigger!" Fabulous, amirite? Why not just say ponyguy, ponygal, why do you have to use fag?

They're both put-downs, insults. But it's still okay to use fag 'cause it just homosexuals, right? It's not based on skin color just who someone sleeps with so it's okay to use the word, right, to mean "person".

Fag has a history that I don't think younger people consider. Children use it as a put-down to other and to mean dirty, bad, wrong even if not to mean homosexual.

I don't care that context, intent, meaning, whatever has changed for you and the younger generations . Society-at-large still uses fag as an extremely derogatory insult. Fag ranks up there w/words like nigger. You just don't say them. It might be okay in certain circles (like online) but don't use them in public spaces.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-16 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
In which case anon, I don't care that fag and faggot are used as derogatory terms. To me they mean cigarette and an offal based food product.

Except unfortunately 4chan has decided to try and give "nigger" similar treatment. I agree with you 100%, but these children think that slurs can be whitewashed through intent alone.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-16 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
Who the fuck ever implied that it was OK to use it in public spaces? OP's secrets is about 4chan's usage, not about mainstream usage.

And I wish I could go back in time and erase every instance of somebody being bullied with the word "fag." (Or any slur.)

Life doesn't work that way.

[identity profile] xelestri.livejournal.com 2012-02-16 05:34 am (UTC)(link)
No. Offensive words are not magically less offensive because of the intent behind them. They are offensive because of the history behind them, because of the negative connotations that have been put behind them.. You can't just erase that because your intent isn't offensive.

If your intent were not offensive, you'd use a different fucking word.

Why is this hard for some people to understand?

(Anonymous) 2012-02-16 07:25 am (UTC)(link)
You gain nothing by using a slur and lose nothing by not using a slur. I will never understand why people have difficulty with this...

(Anonymous) 2012-02-16 08:07 am (UTC)(link)
It's not a lack of understanding, at least not in my case, but simply a difference in philosophy:

There are only 2 ways to stop a harmful word from harming somone you can either ban it outright, make it taboo, or you can change it's meaning through common use.

The former wont work to may way of thinking. it only prereves the words power, or worse, amplifies it, making it more virelent through rarity value. see cunt in america for example.

The latter litterally robs the word of it's power. see cunt in england.

Actually see any swearword in the world.

Bastard comes to mind as a great example.

So...do you not mind if Gen Y do not understand this? Or have you phrased it like this because you assume all of Gen Y already do understand it?

Because, the thing is, I'm Gen Y, and I understand what some people mean by 'fag' but that doesn't mean I agree with that usage, it doesn't mean I'm comfortable with it, and those other people being comfortable with it doesn't just mean that everyone else should suddenly become comfortable with it too.

Words and meanings can change, for sure, but it usually happens over decades if not centuries. Expecting people who've thought of fag in a negative context for the majority of their lives to suddenly start assuming that everyone is now using it positively and therefore not mind it is ridiculous.

Also I disagree with your assertion that fag is no longer profanity by default. I agree that it has picked up some new usage but I would say that statistically its usage as an insult still far outweighs that, and so that is still the default setting for the word.

I do happen to half-agree with you in that I think things should only be offensive when used with the intent to offend. Unfortunately offense isn't as cut and dried as that because it's subjective, so nobody ever saying, "That's (not) offensive!" is going to be right. "That's (not) intended to be offensive," is in fact a different thing and can be correct. What I mean to say is that some people will look for offense wherever they can even when someone else absolutely did not mean to cause it, and I refuse to be offended by someone calling me a dyke or a fag or whatever else they decide to throw at me (and meaning to insult me) because frankly, they obviously aren't worth bothering about if they think it's okay to try to make me feel like shit. Being offended gives them the power - refusing to be offended gives it to me.
