I wish children would learn that words don't magically shed their meanings just because the kid in question wants them to mean something else. "Fag" is offensive. The root of the word is offensive, the usage of the word has at least a hundred years of being offensive stuck behind it, and a straight person calling another straight person a fag because they think it's funny is not fresh, or clever, or new. The word is still profanity by default, junior.

I can't believe I'm actually touching this topic but...

Didn't the word fag originally mean cigarette?

(Anonymous) 2012-02-16 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
Yup, That's where the (English) 'faggot' comes from, if I'm not mistaken- making connections between sucking on longish things, if you catch my drift.

Also, 'fag' and 'faggot' (and words that sounds similar) are words that means different things in different languages. Read the first sentence at the top of this article. (http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basson)

actually it originated as a slur for women and has nothing to do with the modern use for describing a cigarette

faggots are a welsh meatball

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but it originally meant the type of wood you burn (b/c all types aren't suitable for bonfires, idk). I guess it started to mean cigarette because you light them? However it started to mean gay seems disturbing, though.

I'm not sure the connection between British "fag" (cigarette) and American "faggot" (bundles of sticks used for kindling), but those are the two meanings I know.

I was actually talking to an Australian friend after there'd been a secret on Roleplay Secrets with someone upset about a Doctor RPer's use of spastic/spaz. Apparently, in the UK (and associated countries), it's an incredibly horrible thing. Here in the US, I've called myself a spaz, when I space on something. At the same time, she'd never heard of "fag" being anything but a cigarette. So the negative connotations apparently aren't even worldwide, even with in the "same" language.

Faggot: "male homosexual," 1914, Amer.Eng. slang (shortened form fag is from 1921), probably from earlier contemptuous term for "woman" (1590s), especially an old and unpleasant one, in reference to faggot (1) "bundle of sticks," as something awkward that has to be carried (cf. baggage "worthless woman," 1590s).

Fag: British slang for "cigarette" (originally, especially, the butt of a smoked cigarette), 1888, probably from fag-end "extreme end, loose piece" (1610s), from fag "loose piece" (late 15c.)

Both terms come from the bunch of sticks.

Kindling, actually.

No more 'chinks in your armor' then. HDU use that word. It's been used by people to oppress my people for centuries.

Seriously: context. Words mean different things in different contexts. I wish kids would learn that. (You included, sweetheart)
