(Anonymous) 2012-02-16 06:33 am (UTC)(link)A trigger is something that seriously impacts your mental health. It can cause a flashback, panic or a very intense emotional reaction.
Unfortunately, a lot of people are using it to mean something that squicks them. A squick is something which grosses you out. Maybe even grosses you out really, really badly. But it doesn't actually have a severe impact on your overall mental health.
Because people have misused trigger to mean squick, there seems to be a group of people that think people are required to included a warning for anything and everything that squicks them and then call it a trigger warning. This is not true and it's making it hard for people who truly are triggered to explain what happens to them and causes people to be dismissive of their reactions.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-16 10:43 am (UTC)(link)One time I saw a warning given for hemophobia. Want to know how this played out in the post? A mention of the poster's mother having hemophobia. There was no blood in the actual post, no pictures, no descriptions. Only a mention of the existence of a fear. And that's going too far.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-16 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)"there are no trigger warnings in the real world"
This bugs me too, because it seems like, as the person choosing whether to warn for a trigger or not, you're somehow allowed to decide how people with triggers should treat their own mental health, because you know what's best for them, and they should just get used to being triggered like in real life! It sounds too much to me like "grow a thicker skin and your PTSD will go away!" Which may be how it works for some people (exposure therapy is a thing), but hello, you are not my medical professional, thanks.
You can warn or not warn, or whatever floats your boat. But I don't understand the backlash towards people who decide to extend this fairly simple courtesy. I promise they're not making my life with PTSD so soft and comfortable that I'll never ever recover, thanks so much for your concern and well intentioned advice.
TOTALLY OT SORRY just this makes me grate my teeth every time I see it.
