I think this is what bothers me about reclaiming, too. I feel like it would be best just to let those words die.

Those words won't die as long as the culture contains the prejudice that gave birth to those words. If you made it so that everyone in America were physically incapable of saying the N word right now, another offensive slur would come in and take its place. The whole 1984-esque control of language doesn't work in real life.

You see it with euphemism treadmills. "Idiot" isn't okay anymore so we go to "retarded", then that isn't okay anymore, so we go to "handicapped" or "special needs" and then people start using "special" as an insult and it comes full circle to the point that many people who now use "idiot" don't know that it means the same thing as "retarded". Far back enough and we get "simple", which has lost that meaning entirely. But even if we're using new words the core concept of "being mentally handicapped is shameful" survives and is going to continue to survive. TBH I think maybe homophobia and racism can be overcome by social change, but people will always fear physical and mental disability... it's a reminder of human frailty. But that's just my unpopular opinion.
