I always thought it was supposed to be derogatory; for ex. that calling someone a ponyfag = really obsessed MLP fan that had no life out of their fandom (MLP otaku in the Japanese meaning of otaku no what fandom has made it into).

I've never really heard it used in a derogatory fashion. Maybe newfag or something. But that's more insulting because you're calling someone a 'noob'. The 'fag' part is just an endearment.

Same. I've only seen it used in mocking ways "lol such a ponyfag" or whatever.

Fag has no clear meaning or connotation. Oldfag is a term of endearment whereas newfag is derogative. Most of the people use it to refer to themselves, though. There is a guy that loves deep anime and calls himself DEEPFAG, for example. KON fans also call themselves moefags.

I've also seen anons calling themselves "gayfags" or even "fagfags", as opposed to the "straightfags", so yeah. It doesn't have a set meaning.

Nah. Tripfag and newfag might be derogatory, but it's because of the prefix, not the suffix. Drwfag, writefag, etc are just another way of saying person who draws or writes.
