It's new-ish for me, as in I'm sure it's been around for quite some time, but I've only somewhat recently (as in the past couple of years) become aware of it.

I still find the practice problematic because even if it's on your own terms, it doesn't change the fact that people were (and in many cases still are) using the word as a derogatory slur. That doesn't sit well with me at all because then someone can use the term toward you in a condescending manner (that isn't obvious in intent) and then brush it off as reclamation or using it in a loving way or whatever if you call them out on it, and again, I see it as downplaying the fact that it's a put-down, like sweeping it's old meaning under the rug because it's unpleasant.

A slur is a slur to me. I'd rather they fade away into obscurity than become a-okay for popular use.

Sometimes the only way for a slur to fade into obscurity is for it's connotation to be changed. It's not exactly ideal, but it's usually what ends up happening.

When it's no longer a crime, morally and legally, to be gay, fag will change its meaning. Until them, all you are doing is encouraging more people to use hatespeech.

I'd rather people stopped using a slur rather than have the meaning change, but this is true. I can't alter what other people do, however, and that's something that's never going to change. I can only keep slurs out of my own speech and hope that others do the same. Me being pushy about it will change nothing as far as I'm concerned, and if reclaiming a word is how others wish to discredit something as a slur, then that's their choice.

Languages evolve, deal with it.

True, people may still use it as a slur, but I find it hard to believe that differentiating whether a word is used as a slur or as a term of endearment is hard. And if they use it as an insult and you see it as a term of endearment, then all the more power to you.

If other people want to use a slur as a term of endearment, fine, whatever. I'm not in charge of what you say, and I'm not going to police anyone, but my patience is wearing thin. Frankly, I'm sick of having this argument with people who seem to think it's okay to run around using insults as endearments. You want to do it? Fine. Go ahead. Just don't do it around me or criticize me for disliking the practice of reclamation. Yeah, it can give the word less power, but in my experience, it hasn't.
