Like others said, the musical just has him being kind to her because she's dying and he had affection for her. He doesn't realize he's in love with her.

In the book he barely notices that she's dying. I think she even has to basically say, "Hey, I'm dying down here, Marius."

You don't want anybody to be your Marius unless you're Cosette.
