I was ten when Star Wars came out. My sister and our two best friends stood in a line that went *around the movie theatre* in our tiny little town to see it. We sat in the dark and the words rolled up the screen and the music played and then the SPACESHIPS came into view and the robots and the lasers and the Princess and it was FUCKING FANTASTIC.

Next to Alien, it was one of the greatest movie moments of my life. I fell for Luke, my sister fell for Han, we both wanted to be Leia and we saw the movie as many more times that summer as our parents would allow.

Hate it all you want - for some of us, it is a part of our childhood and for the movie industry, the beginning of some amazing new things.

Aw, this made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. NGL I wish I'd been able to see the original Star Wars trilogy when it first came out in theatres. My experiences of going to see Star Wars as a child in the theatres was all the prequels. ):

I know that Star Wars isn't the 'pinnacle' of story telling, but oh, man. There was *nothing* like it then, nothing at all, and it was so amazing....sealed the deal for me and sci-fi for the rest of my life.

I...must say that i pity anyone who only knew the prequels. They were just...not as good.

This comment is so wonderful

I was a kid in the 90's, but it was a huge part of my childhood too. My uncle showed them to me for the first time when I was, I think, 7. (apparently, when the Empire Strikes Back ended, I burst into tears. I can't remember THAT, but I DO remember being stunned and appalled and hurt that NO ONE HAD SAVED HAN YET. I could not believe it!) I've definitely found movies since that I think are BETTER, but I will never stop loving these three. They're comfort movies, even now. I watch them when I'm sick, I watch them when I'm sad. I put one of them on when I'm cooking and want to listen to something I know perfectly enough to picture.

Awwww! Comfort-movie!
:)

We have a vhs-tape set of the original three, which we can't watch anymore as our vcr has been kaput for years. I really would love to have them on dvd but i do *not* want the 'new' versions. I want what i saw in the theatre in 1977, damnit.

Actually, the DVDs that look like this have both the original and ~special editions on em

(I still watch my VHS set, hee - our old combination DVD/VHS player still half-works. the DVD player on it busted so we have a new shiny one, but kept the combo because the VCR on it is still good. Still, perhaps I should upgrade with these.) They're not a box set and could be a bit harder to find now that there are so many out there, but they might suit you.

Ah ha. I'll have to look around for them. I hate that he 'fixed' the originals with new CGI. Unnecessary!

Our poor vcr just toasted altogether. We still have some vhs tapes, though. My mom has a dvd/vcr thing that will make a copy of the vcr tape to dvd, so i need to borrow that for a week or so and get everything off tape.
