Oh no. People like things you don't. The horror.

I mean, you don't like it, fine. But shit? Really? >_>;

I rarely admit this aloud, but I'm not all too fond of Star Wars myself. I've seen all the movies, and during each one I've had to force myself not to get up and leave.

I'm not a huge fan of Star Wars, but I really think calling it "unimaginative" is ignorant at best. Maybe you're myopic because you're young and live in a world where so much has been inspired by and drawn from Star Wars, but at the time it was innovative. I agree that it's obvious they were making everything up as they went along and that the acting and storyline aren't really anything to write home about, but unimaginative? Really?

Lol Nope.

[identity profile] neko-9786.livejournal.com 2012-02-16 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
It totally failed at being an epic saga, I mean It's not like it helped solidify the tradition of summer blockbusters or spawned three (horrible) prequels or anything. Star Wars expanded universe? What's that?

[identity profile] nochi_san.livejournal.com 2012-02-16 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
Every time someone calls Star Wars "unoriginal", it's a tie in my brain between this (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SeinfeldIsUnfunny) and going "OF COURSE IT IS, IT'S THE FREAKING HERO'S JOURNEY ARCHETYPE".

I think the difference is that with the original trilogy, the people making it knew it was silly to some degree. It was just supposed to be entertainment. The new movies take themselves way more seriously and they just have less "heart" overall -- partially because Lucas tries to control everything and the acting comes out stale and wooden (in the original movies, the actors came up with some of their own lines and were able to "own" their characters more). So that's a main reason why a lot of people hate the new trilogy but love the old one, besides nostalgia of course

This has always pissed me off, too. It's like you woke up one day and the sky was green. It's like you keep asking, "Guys, don't you think it's odd how green the sky is?" And everyone else says, "What're you talking about? The sky's blue." It's not BLUE, guys, it's GREEN. The sky is GREEN and Star Wars sucks.

You sound young. No seriously, you are saying that the worldbuilding and such isn't original, it's only that way because people have been copying it for decades. I remember being blown away by Starwars it when it came out. The scale of it was just boggling. It was a neat, fun, exciting story with kick ass special effects during a time when that wasn't the norm at all. Remember this was 1977 -- no CGI, kick-ass women characters were unbelievably rare, it was a much more naive and ethnocentric time. Seeing all these cultures and creatures and worlds on the screen was mind-blowing.

[identity profile] shadowpiranha.livejournal.com 2012-02-16 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
Um, okay. I'll keep on liking it, if you don't mind. But I am laughing at you calling it a failure, I really am.

[identity profile] sylva-rerum.livejournal.com 2012-02-16 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
And the reason anyone is supposed to care about what you think is...?

[identity profile] otakugal15.livejournal.com 2012-02-16 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
You lost your entire point when I got to "world building was atrocious."

Not everything is JUST the fucking movies. Some of us prefer the comics and books over G canon, moron.

Don't like? Then fuck off and leave it for the rest of us.

I was ten when Star Wars came out. My sister and our two best friends stood in a line that went *around the movie theatre* in our tiny little town to see it. We sat in the dark and the words rolled up the screen and the music played and then the SPACESHIPS came into view and the robots and the lasers and the Princess and it was FUCKING FANTASTIC.

Next to Alien, it was one of the greatest movie moments of my life. I fell for Luke, my sister fell for Han, we both wanted to be Leia and we saw the movie as many more times that summer as our parents would allow.

Hate it all you want - for some of us, it is a part of our childhood and for the movie industry, the beginning of some amazing new things.

Oh. Also, lightsabers. Just that alone makes it win.

It's strange. I know not everyone likes the same things. I know that people tend to go on and on about why That Thing They Hate is so terribly, objectively awful and nobody anywhere should ever like it. I know all this applies to even the most well-liked, classic works.

And yet something about this secret just screams "troll". I just can't put my finger on it.
