I agree with OP, but I thought Katniss would have commited suicide in Mockingjay, bringing Snow and Coin down with her. Don't get me wrong, I don't promote suicide in any way, but since the books were already drenched with death, I thought Katniss's suicide would be more symbolic instead of depressing. To me, Katniss died a figurative death when her sister died. After that incident, the rest of the novel is a bleak, depressing read. She is completely OOC by the end of Mockingjay, hiding in closets, overdosing on the morphine, and saying yes to another Hunger Games, even though it was the very thing she sought to prevent in the first two books. Keeping Katniss alive with such a dreary view on life is more depressing to deal with than a Katniss who would have died in-character, striving to prevent another Hunger Games.

I hoped the death of Katniss would cause the rebels to realize that they were no better than the gamemakers or the people of Panam. They, too, were guilty of using children to fight in senseless battles. The people will realize what they've turned Katniss into: a deadly weapon for destruction, a reverse mockingjay. This realization would have made the story much more compelling to read.

I thought the reason she agreed to another Hunger Games was just to save face in front of President What's-Her-Face, the one from District 13, so that later Katniss could get close enough to assassinate her and end the tyranny of the Capitol once and for all? Because it seemed pretty clear from her internal monologue that she really didn't agree with the idea, and she thought that the new president was just going to continue President Snow's policies, only in the name of 'freedom'. And her asking to continue the Hunger Games just cemented that in Katniss' mind. But if she'd voted 'no', well, Katniss had served her purpose as a rallying point for the revolution and could be safely disposed of or locked away somewhere, probably 'for her health', because everyone could see she was sick by that point.

I do like your point about forcing the rebels to consider their position, though.

I also thought that was her motivation, seeing that in her inner monologe she wonders if Haymitch will trust her in this situation as well. (It actually made me wonder, that President Cain and the others bought her "revenge for Prim" line. THAT was obviously completely OOC for Katniss.)
