While that would have been a powerful and dramatic conclusion, leaving Katniss and Peeta alive to deal with the repercussions of the Games makes for a more interesting story. Alive, Katniss has to pay for her act of defiance and weigh the potential cost of future rebellion against the horrors of the status quo. That's ultimately a more compelling story to me.

[identity profile] bamboo.livejournal.com 2012-02-18 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
If Collins didn't blow up those kids which led to Katniss' actions toward the new leader in the end, it could've been. Maybe. But if they'd committed suicide in addition to what happened, it would've been just... depressing. I felt like what happened to Prim was a copout to effectively kill the other side of the triangle in one fell swoop and cement KatnissPeeta without having to go through more relationship angst.

[identity profile] dinerstate.livejournal.com 2012-02-18 05:36 am (UTC)(link)
I agree, really. Honestly, everything including and after the whole Nut planning session felt like a pretty big, rushed asspull-y copout to me too. Like, I eyerolled so hard through the last third of Mockingjay that I almost would have traded in Catching Fire to see Katniss and Peeta really eat the berries.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-18 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
I'm really really glad they didn't. Even if it was unintentional, it would be another popular source portraying suicide as glamorous and romantic. There is already a huge problem with teen suicide, the last thing needed is a popular book featuring suicide as an option.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-18 02:17 pm (UTC)(link)
OP here.

Oh you mean LIKE FUCKING TWILIGHT??? At least if Hunger Games had gone through with the suicides of Katniss and Peeta, it was for a better reason. It was about taking control away from the Capitol, not about love or romance.

And Hunger Games did feature suicide as an options. It's brought up at least twice: once at the end of the first book, with Katniss and Peeta and the berries, and once at the end of the last book, with Katniss trying to consume the suicide pill after killing Coin and then starving herself in her prison. Neither of these seem really glamorous or romantic to me, certainly not like in Twilight with Bella's attempts on her life to connect with Edward.

I would have preferred that ending, but for selfish preferences.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-18 02:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Now I'm curious. Why?

And moreover, where is your icon from? I've seen it all over on FandomSecrets and it looks so freaking familiar to me.

This is young adult fiction. You realize that protagonists don't die in young adult fiction, right?

(Anonymous) 2012-02-18 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
I agree with OP, but I thought Katniss would have commited suicide in Mockingjay, bringing Snow and Coin down with her. Don't get me wrong, I don't promote suicide in any way, but since the books were already drenched with death, I thought Katniss's suicide would be more symbolic instead of depressing. To me, Katniss died a figurative death when her sister died. After that incident, the rest of the novel is a bleak, depressing read. She is completely OOC by the end of Mockingjay, hiding in closets, overdosing on the morphine, and saying yes to another Hunger Games, even though it was the very thing she sought to prevent in the first two books. Keeping Katniss alive with such a dreary view on life is more depressing to deal with than a Katniss who would have died in-character, striving to prevent another Hunger Games.

I hoped the death of Katniss would cause the rebels to realize that they were no better than the gamemakers or the people of Panam. They, too, were guilty of using children to fight in senseless battles. The people will realize what they've turned Katniss into: a deadly weapon for destruction, a reverse mockingjay. This realization would have made the story much more compelling to read.

OP, I understand how you feel. Head over to goodreads.com and read the reviews. You'll realize more people agree with you there than they do here on LJ.

*I will warn for spoilers here even though we're under a spoiler warning already*

I thought the reason she agreed to another Hunger Games was just to save face in front of President What's-Her-Face, the one from District 13, so that later Katniss could get close enough to assassinate her and end the tyranny of the Capitol once and for all? Because it seemed pretty clear from her internal monologue that she really didn't agree with the idea, and she thought that the new president was just going to continue President Snow's policies, only in the name of 'freedom'. And her asking to continue the Hunger Games just cemented that in Katniss' mind. But if she'd voted 'no', well, Katniss had served her purpose as a rallying point for the revolution and could be safely disposed of or locked away somewhere, probably 'for her health', because everyone could see she was sick by that point.

I do like your point about forcing the rebels to consider their position, though.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-18 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
OP here. I feel like I should explain better why I wish they had committed suicide since I didn't have the room to fully elaborate in my secret.

One, I would have loved to see Katniss and Peeta give that big middle finger to the Capitol by taking control out of their hands.

Two, I would have loved to seen how their deaths affected their loved ones and the rebellion. The majority of the books are spent on Katniss and Peeta. It's not terribly often that Prim or Gale or anyone else is given screen time to react. I think it would have been fascinating for the first book to focus on Katniss and her sacrifice and then a sequel book to focus on Gale and Prim and the rebellion fueled by the suicide.

Three, Katniss was already little more than a figurehead for the rebellion. It would have been interesting to see her shown as a martyr and put on a pedestal.

[identity profile] unicornherds.livejournal.com 2012-02-18 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
I understand what you're saying, but disagree because I don't believe in celebrating martyrs, and dislike when suicides are put up on a pedestal. There are better ways to say Fuck You to the system and to take control out of their hands rather than suicide.

Well said. I agree whole-heartedly. I was hoping Gale would have had more screen-time in the second book, maybe even participate in a Hunger Games himself. If only the series took off the way you described it.

[identity profile] deadtree.livejournal.com 2012-02-18 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
I wish that had happened so that the next two books would never have existed and the world would just have the far superior first book :)

(Anonymous) 2012-02-18 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
OP here. I don't wish the other two books hadn't existed because I did enjoy them. But I do very much agree that the first book was the better of the three and, if the ending hadn't have been a cliffhanger, I would have enjoyed it as a solo novel.

[identity profile] dinerstate.livejournal.com 2012-02-18 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
Haha, same. I mean, I loved quite a few characters in Catching Fire but everything past the first book was kind of a mess.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-18 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
I kind of wish Katniss had killed Peeta. Not because I hate Peeta (or hate Katniss/Peeta) but because it would have been a fitting end and she was ready to do it if she had to. Plus then I wonder if the next two books could still have happened, just very differently. (Not saying Katniss would have said "Eh, killed Peeta but I'm not dead, yippee!)

(Let me repeat, I don't hate Peeta, and I don't hate the ending to the first book. But I felt almost cheated that they both got to survive when that had never, ever happened in the history of the Games.)

(Anonymous) 2012-02-18 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
diff anon... the more I think about it, the more I agree with you. Except for the fact that Peeta spent the majority of his time in the Capitol and the Games trying to protect her, she has no real loyalty to him. Yes, Katniss has a sense of honor and paying back debts she's owed; it's a big character trait for her. But without that, she'd have no connection to Peeta. He was never her friend and she didn't love him in the first set of Games.

And she's a survivalist. She broke laws so that she could feed her family, she hunted to provide for those who depended on her. Even though she went into the Games certain that she would not have come back out, I think it would have made sense for her to seize upon being the last of two and kill Peeta. of course, her honor and debt to him was what stopped that but, I agree, it would have been interesting.

[identity profile] cure-light.livejournal.com 2012-02-18 08:29 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's kind of how I feel, too. Or a part of me wanted one of them to change their mind about the suicide at the last second and have the other actually die, leaving the survivor to win by 'accident'. It would have been really terrible, but kind of interesting.

[identity profile] master-kogane.livejournal.com 2012-02-18 07:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't trade the "real or not real?" ending for anything - it just made my heart hurt so beautifully.

There were only a few things that left me wondering if Mockingjay was maybe a bit rushed.

For one, Peeta's pearl. I was so, so sure it would be important later on, and then it just isn't mentioned anymore.

The way Haymitch leaves them before the epilogue makes me think that he finally manages to drink himself to death recently after. I would have liked for him to be the grumpy uncle to Katniss' and Peeta's kids.

And, well, I would have liked to learn how Gale's life turned out in District 2, but it does kinda make sense for Katniss to wash herself clean of that painful part of her past.

/has only read the entire trilogy recently
/and no one to share ALL THESE FEELINGS with
