OP here. I feel like I should explain better why I wish they had committed suicide since I didn't have the room to fully elaborate in my secret.

One, I would have loved to see Katniss and Peeta give that big middle finger to the Capitol by taking control out of their hands.

Two, I would have loved to seen how their deaths affected their loved ones and the rebellion. The majority of the books are spent on Katniss and Peeta. It's not terribly often that Prim or Gale or anyone else is given screen time to react. I think it would have been fascinating for the first book to focus on Katniss and her sacrifice and then a sequel book to focus on Gale and Prim and the rebellion fueled by the suicide.

Three, Katniss was already little more than a figurehead for the rebellion. It would have been interesting to see her shown as a martyr and put on a pedestal.

I understand what you're saying, but disagree because I don't believe in celebrating martyrs, and dislike when suicides are put up on a pedestal. There are better ways to say Fuck You to the system and to take control out of their hands rather than suicide.

OP here. I don't believe in celebrating martyrs either but see what President Coin did when they thought Katniss died during her mission in the Capitol? She was instantly honored as a fallen hero. It was already done in the book near the end; I would have been fascinated to see it done all the way through.

Another thing in addition to what OP is saying is that suicide, within the context of the Arena, is a hugely different story. When your other option is pretty much guaranteed even-more-horrifying death, it becomes less about putting suicide on a pedestal and more about an understandable least-terrble-death. For that matter, I'm surprised it isn't more common in the Games, and I'm really surprised that nobody's deliberately jumped off their platform before the 60 seconds right at the start: in that situation, can you really begrudge them choosing a quick death over whatever the Careers decide will look cool on television? It's almost hard for me to call it suicide under those circumstances. I just really think being in the Arena makes it totally different. A lot of people think Foxface ate the berries deliberately -- and when the choice is that or slow starvation, can you blame her?

OP here.

Thank you for better voicing my own thoughts for me, and for giving me new ideas. I'm honestly shocked I didn't even question whether the Games had numerous suicides before Katniss and Peeta tried it. I can't imagine that there were seventy-four years of Games and no one suicided before the berry attempt. I'm sure there had to be some at least and it was downplayed by the Capitol or they faked the footage for a better death somehow, but it was impossible for them to do that with the final two tributes making a silent suicide pact at the very end of the Games, hence why the Capitol was so mad.

And thank you for getting what I mean by suicide in the Arena. I too think it's very different circumstances than if one suicided in every day life.

Well said. I agree whole-heartedly. I was hoping Gale would have had more screen-time in the second book, maybe even participate in a Hunger Games himself. If only the series took off the way you described it.
