I kind of wish Katniss had killed Peeta. Not because I hate Peeta (or hate Katniss/Peeta) but because it would have been a fitting end and she was ready to do it if she had to. Plus then I wonder if the next two books could still have happened, just very differently. (Not saying Katniss would have said "Eh, killed Peeta but I'm not dead, yippee!)

(Let me repeat, I don't hate Peeta, and I don't hate the ending to the first book. But I felt almost cheated that they both got to survive when that had never, ever happened in the history of the Games.)

diff anon... the more I think about it, the more I agree with you. Except for the fact that Peeta spent the majority of his time in the Capitol and the Games trying to protect her, she has no real loyalty to him. Yes, Katniss has a sense of honor and paying back debts she's owed; it's a big character trait for her. But without that, she'd have no connection to Peeta. He was never her friend and she didn't love him in the first set of Games.

And she's a survivalist. She broke laws so that she could feed her family, she hunted to provide for those who depended on her. Even though she went into the Games certain that she would not have come back out, I think it would have made sense for her to seize upon being the last of two and kill Peeta. of course, her honor and debt to him was what stopped that but, I agree, it would have been interesting.

Yeah, that's kind of how I feel, too. Or a part of me wanted one of them to change their mind about the suicide at the last second and have the other actually die, leaving the survivor to win by 'accident'. It would have been really terrible, but kind of interesting.

Yeah, I kept thinking of all the terrible outcomes during and after I read the book, all the horrible things that could have happened, and how much more thrilling it would be.
I am a terrible person for being excited by that.
