Uhhhhhhhh
So what, you're saying that because some (most) people have a sex drive, that rape is somehow LESS tramautizing and horrible for them? Rot in hell, seriously

Because don't you know we "sexuals" (LOL SERIOUSLY) want to have sex ALL THE TIME, it's all we literally ever think about

(Anonymous) 2012-02-18 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
what is with sexuals thinking that term is derogatory in the least, get over yourself

(Anonymous) 2012-02-18 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
idk man

what is with asexuals thinking there's absolutely nothing iffy about forcing a label on a group that defines them solely by the fact they sometimes enjoy sex

(Anonymous) 2012-02-18 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
No shit. It does nothing but foster the "us vs. them" bullshit that I hate so goddamn much I can't even tell you.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-18 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
because it's relevant when we're discussing sexuality, moron. it's not like they go around defining people by their sexuality when it's not relevant.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-18 05:00 pm (UTC)(link)
idk, the same thing that's with, say, trans folk (or disabled folk, etc) forcing a label on a majority group that defines them solely by the fact that their internal gender corresponds to their secondary sexual characteristics and the gender/sex labels assigned by society

because who doesn't hate being called cisgendered (or TAB or neurotypical or whatever), right? we're just ordinary, normal people, stop labeling us against our wills, man

and i'm not trying to form false equivalencies or play oppression olympics here, just pointing out that a frequent natural consequence of banding together as an 'us' is developing a label for the 'not us', and that it's a valuable tactic for people who feel marginalized to come up with such terms to force the majority to re-examine their position as the default human being

having labels for both in-group and out-group puts them on a slightly more equal rhetorical footing

(Anonymous) 2012-02-18 05:07 pm (UTC)(link)
and i'm not trying to form false equivalencies or play oppression olympics here

By comparing asexuality to transgender or a disability, you just did. Try again.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-18 05:25 pm (UTC)(link)
sorry for your reading comprehension fail, but drawing parallels between two things or finding common patterns is in no way the same as implicitly or explicitly assigning them equal value. for example, you can find common themes of human conflict between political campaigning and high school melodrama despite the fact that that one is considerably higher-stakes than the other.

Oppression Olympics sucks, but being so eager to avoid it that you bar all comparisons ever, sight unseen, isn't exactly great either
even aside from the fact language and brains make it difficult to discuss anything without comparing, contrasting, or referring back to other things, it sucks for intersectionality

(or is it only okay to draw paralels between equally legitimate oppressions but not to acknowledge that terms like 'cisgendered' and fannish silliness like 'muggle' or 'mundane' are coming from the same basic linguistic urge?)

"Sorry, but I'm right" isn't an argument. Try again.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-18 06:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Neither is ignoring the entire rest of an argument based on the opening phrase.

Also, you first.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-18 06:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Shifting the burden of proof isn't an argument, either. You've used up your three strikes, I'm afraid.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-18 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
What burden of proof has been shifted? I offered several arguments and you ignored all them in favor of engaging in the exact same "sorry I'm right" behavior that you accused me of. The ball is still in your court, as far as I can tell.

I'm willing to listen to counter-arguments, but I can't do so until you actually make any.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-18 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Because it's your argument that it's totally okay to "other" people with a bullshit label in the first place. Make one that doesn't smack of the "asexuals are just as oppressed as the LGBT community" fallacy, or kindly shut up.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-19 02:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I never said that it was totally okay, only that it was a natural human impulse. I personally don't see the harm in it, though, coming from a small group (whether it's frivolous groups like fandoms or more serious categories) to a much larger majority- even when there isn't any oppression going on, the small group almost always lacks the numbers and social capital for those labels to be of any use as a weapon. How does it hurt me if someone from AVEN calls me a 'sexual' or if a Harry Potter fan labels me a 'muggle'? I've experience real, painful, stomach-churning Othering in my life, and I really don't think 'bullshit labels' are at all comparable in scope.

I also never said that asexuals are just as oppressed- in fact, I explicitly and repeatedly made a point (or at least tried to) of disclaiming that they aren't. If that wasn't communicated clearly enough, I apologize sincerely for giving that impression, but this pattern is the core of my frustration here- we seem to be talking past each other since most of your arguments are against positions that I never once tried to speak in support of.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-19 03:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I explicitly and repeatedly made a point (or at least tried to) of disclaiming that they aren't. If that wasn't communicated clearly enough, I apologize sincerely for giving that impression

No, it really wasn't. It smacked of backpedaling to me because the first examples you used were those of actual oppressed people (transgender especially). And when I pointed that out, you got super-defensive and pulled out the "you only disagree because you don't understand me" argument. Whatever valid point you might've had got lost, then.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-19 05:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Because of my cognitive issues, certain aspects of communication are sometimes difficult for me. I selected those examples off the top of my head because they're both groups that I belong to- (the fandom examples, which in retrospect would have made my point stronger and less ambiguous, aren't in-group for me and weren't being brain-accessible at the moment) but even in the original post I stated that it wasn't equivalent. Any defensiveness after that point was out of bafflement at being criticized for saying something that I'd made efforts to be explicit that I wasn't saying and frustration at the arduous task of trying to clarify in a way that would make sense outside of my own head.

I was and continue to agree with your one argument, and again apologize if it came across that I wasn't. If you're not interested in addressing any of my subsequent points, then I don't see anything worthwhile or productive in continuing this.

Don't call me a fucking "sexual" because I have sex sometimes

You don't get to label me or define me by my sexuality

Die forever

(Anonymous) 2012-02-18 12:09 pm (UTC)(link)
boo hooooooooo i am so repressed

get over it, you sexual slob.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-18 03:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Get over yourself, dude. Being ace doesn't make you so fucking special that you get to force labels on everyone else.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-18 02:57 pm (UTC)(link)
You know, I'm asexual and I hate it when people call non-aces "sexuals" because it implies that aces are incapable of being sexual, which is a problematic stereotype. I don't experience sexual attraction, but I do consider myself to be sexual, so it pisses me off.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-18 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Very, VERY sexual DA here. First of all, you telling someone to die invalidates your entire point. Check your shit.

Second, get the fuck OVER yourself. Like someone else above mentioned, when you're talking about sexual orientation, labeling people as sexuals vs asexuals is in no way derogatory, it's informative and relevant to the discussion. Stop being hypersensitive and melodramatic for a change.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-20 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, it's extremely derogatory, because a lot of "sexuals" are fucking *denied* from being "sexual".

How fucked up do you have to be to call people "sexual" who, some of which, if they actually were sexual (as in, doing sexual stuff) risk being fucking murdered?

You're gross, and you're making all of us asexuals look like assholes.
What the HELL is wrong with you? THIS is why people look down on asexuals, your bullshit right there. People hate this for a reason. It's horrible. You're being viciously homophobic AND transphobic, only to get internet brownie points. You really make me sick and wish I wasn't asexual just so I'm not in a group with scum like you.
