It colours the views on fanworks, opinions, the person, and whatnot. Like that tendency to treat dude in slash fandom as unicorns, or ladies in gaming communities as pariahs or immediate, possibly sexually available, brosephines. Or how folk outside of fandom expect women in fandom to be depraved/lonely/extremely into yaoi. Unfortunate, but it's a natural thing. I mean, you get it irl too what with gender roles still affecting most folk's opinions of strangers.

I hadn't thought about that, though it makes perfect sense. Strangely, gender has never been much a problem for me online or off, but reading other people's troubles with being a girl in x fandom or a boy in z fandom should have clued me in as far as how the perceptions of one's worth in a given situation can change depending on your gender. Damn, this is depressing. :(
