I wonder why I never questioned this as a child...

I think I personally never questioned it because I never really saw the Muppets as the characters, but as actors playing the characters. So those weren't really their children, they were actors playing their children (plus, isn't Tiny Tim played by Robin, who is Kermit's nephew? I think that might've been part of where I got the "actors" thing from).
