As for pronouns, I usually use "they" unless I know what the person uses or have a pretty good guess. Asking can be really nice, though.
However, personally, it doesn't bother me that much when people call me "she" in fandom by mistake. A lot of the time, it comes across as a default, and I figure a lot of people assume that someone is female or use "she" out of habit because LJ fandom is largely female. The only awkward thing is not knowing whether I should correct them or not. I'm not saying that messing up on the pronoun doesn't matter, because it can be hurtful to some people. But personally, I know that realistically sometimes people will use certain pronouns out of habit whenever talking about someone they don't know well.
