Yeah, but a good story about characters/couple you are not interested in is probably not going to get to you. I like some characters and I like to read about them. And I like those characters with some other characters and so I read about that, too. Why would I read about something I don't care about.

In real life, I don't watch every film or read every book that is release. I only read what I'm interested in. I think fic it's the same.
