Actually, I don't really find a lot of characters that I ship attractive, looks-wise anyway. Sure my OTPs tend to be characters that I also find hot, but we're talking about shipping in general here. I adore England/Japan. I think they're precious together. It's one of my favorite ships. I don't think either of them is particularly attractive. Especially not England tbh. Prussia/Italy is one of my favorite ships. I don't find Italy hot. I do that pretty often actually. This isn't the norm, sure, but it's not like it's unheard of or impossible. I ship these pairings because I really love the emotional dynamic between the characters.
And, to be honest, I see nothing wrong in being interested in porn or what have you because it (and the characters) arouse you. There's no hierarchy of reasons to be in fandom.
I never said there was anything wrong with it. I said that I don't understand being so invested in the eroticism above anything else that you can't ship anything that you can't fap to. And this is coming from someone who spends a lot of time reading and writing porn and such, so it's not like I'm a prude here or not understanding the appeal of smut.

That's a distinction I don't make, personally. I like several couples, ones more than others. And in all of them I find the characters (or one character at least) attractive enough to be interested in them.
In my case, finding a character nice to look at is part of their charm.

If you only read porn with to masturbate, it makes perfect sense to me that you don't acre about things that don't arouse you. It's like watching real life porn: one chooses what to watch based on what one finds attractive.
I like ships because I like the characters as individuals and they are interesting together. But if someone wants to ship X/B only because they find it hot or dislike it because the characters leave them cold, that's awesome.

Well congratulations, but that's you. Not everyone. And I'm sure I'm not the only person in all of fandom who has ships that involve characters who don't turn me on.

Maybe I did. Maybe I was also slightly incoherent because it was past midnight and I was tired. I'm saying now that I don't think it's lesser or what have you but it's a mentality that I absolutely don't understand.

This paragraph is exactly what I'm talking about here; the implication that the only thing shipping is good for is porn. Okay, yes. I find Austria/Hungary and Hungary/Romania both to be incredibly hot. But I also love Austria/Hungary for the aspects of how they go through several power shifts between the two of them over time and have to adjust to that, how their opinions of and feelings for one another shift over time, and how strongly connected to each other they are. I also love Hungary/Romania for the dynamic of a hatred so intense that it becomes an obsession that becomes lust. It's a relationship that started off amiable but lukewarm, but then flared up into intense, passionate loathing. It's fascinating to look at how they interact. There's so much more to both ships, and pretty much every ship out there in any fandom, than porn of two attractive people fucking. I really do feel as though people who completely ignore all of those other things that come with shipping in favor of "oh look hot people having sex!" are missing out on a lot.
I also think this is where a ton of OOC fic comes from, but that's another story.no subject

Yes, you did. And it's cool if you were tired and realised that there's nothing sad, wrong or worth of judging in being in fandom only for hot people porn.

What you feel about your ships is what most people feel for them. It's not better than only shipping for porn, though.

I don't think they are missing anything because they are not looking for something else but porn. Like, I like horror movies and I don't watch rom-coms. I'm sure that there are lovely rom-coms out there, but it's not something I'm interested in. So, when I download films, I go for horror or historical or humour or the stuff I like and I am not missing out anything because I'm making a conscious decision of only consuming X thing.
Lastly, I'm always annoyed at the "OMG, porn!" attitude. I'm not saying it's your case, as our interests don't overlap and I don't know what you read, but there's an annoying prudishness in some parts of fandom that just makes me mad. Like the "there's too much porn" post in

....Why are you even bringing that up at me when I said above that I write porn? I hate the anti-porn attitude that some people have in fandom, too. Since. You know. I write smutfic and not a whole lot else.

What I'm talking about here is when people take a ship that is somehow dysfunctional, usually rivalships or hateships but not necessarily, and make it fluffy happy twu wuv. I think a lot of that comes from people only picking the ship because of how they look together, then wanting to see two people have happy sex, so they strip out everything that makes the relationship between the characters what it is.

I do understand why some people are only into m/m or m/f or f/f and it's not only for the porn. Sometimes characters/ships don't speak to you and gender may be one of the factors.
I don't see much of the "dysfunctional couple turned into fluff" because FrUK writers are quite good and USUK bends easily into fluff and those are the ships I read enough to have an opinion.
