You know One Piece does have a bizarrely small fandom, compared to it's apparently popularity.
I wonder why this is.

No shipping wars.
People love participating in wank, and One Piece has virtually almost no wank whatsoever.
Of course there are the few people who ship the characters with themselves (I'm sorry, I meant original characters) but others just let things be. And everyone is pretty aware that everything Oda does is made tongue-in-cheek, so people don't bitch about the story so much either if there's drama involved.
On top of it all, the whole fandom is pretty old, and the oldest fans have done a good job of keeping it together, in a very peaceful manner.

I love OP fandom so, so much.

All of this times a million. Less shipping wars, more orgies Nakamaship. <3

If only all fandom was as wonderful and peaceful as One Piece fandom; imagine how different the internet would be...

I would add that Oda also give you pretty much everything you want to be a satisfied reader (back stories for EVERYONE, a long evolving plot with little to no plotholes, complex character relationships, ongoing concurrent stories for old characters in the chapter title pages) in canon. Compare that to a large shonen fandom like Bleach or Naruto where a large amount of fic is spent "fixing" things - whether it be characters or plot development. There's no need for a lot of speculating or long epic fics because in a week you're going to get something better anyways.

One Piece has one of the tightest and best-organized plots I've ever read, and every main character has their back story told in loving, angst-ridden detail. And the side characters have their own stories, and return at periodic intervals. There aren't really all that many holes to stitch up with fanfic.

I agree with this! I like having a small, peaceful fandom, but at the same time I would adore having more people to discuss with and more fanfiction to read. If I had time, I'd love to do an OPfest for fic and art to get people's creative juices going.

It's a shame, because the fandom actually seems to be dwindling. Sales figures show that One Piece continues to be most of the most popular manga and it's sales are actually growing, but the fandom (here on LJ, at least) is getting quieter and quieter.

I've seen people say it's because of the Marineford arc and not seeing so many of the main characters for so long, but it was already shrinking, even before then. The drabble comms in particular struggle for participants and the ficcing comms have gone from several updates a day to a handful a week, if that.

I've seen people try to do One Piece fests and big-bangs before (there was one just last year, I think) but they never seem to get off the ground because there's so little participation. Same with attempts at kink memes - they never last long. :(

Exactly! I remember going onto TvTropes fanfic recs and finding, to my shock, that there were only a handful of One Piece stories there. (Say what you like about quality, but normally you'd expect such a widespread fandom to churn out more). Which was jarring, especially after the pages and pages of Naruto and Harry Potter stories.

I think the above comments are right, and a lot of it stems from there not being many ships stemming from the original work. There aren't even any very shippy moments, and certainly not enough people to wank over it. I mean, I ship Luffy/Nami, but if someone said they didn't, I'd nod and read their work and enjoy it anyway. (Maybe it's because there's so little fic that fans are instantly grateful no matter what?)

That, and One Piece is quite hard to write for. Oda churns out plot twists quite quickly (I remember being in the middle of a massive fic when Marineford happened, making my entire story complete nonsense) and rarely do we get a character without a lot of backstory, so there's not much we can imagine.

What I want to know is where the heck Kuro is - off being the manipulating manservant of another rich girl? Plotting revenge on Luffy and crew?? I MUST know!
