okami is so unique. i love that game, too. i'm kinda struggling to think of a recommendation, though.

you might like the ico/shadow of the colossus set for ps3. they feature unique stories that feel classic. they're provacative and engaging with a ghostly beauty.

[identity profile] hksherra.livejournal.com 2012-02-22 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
I agree! I adore Okami to death and equally enjoyed Shadow of the Colossus/Ico. They are all in my top 5 video games!

If you have a Wii, I'd also suggest Legend of Zelda games. They have similar gameplay in that you're running around exploring, running errands for people, playing minigames, and working on that epic plotline.

You should give El Shaddai a try, if you haven't already!

[identity profile] kicktobefamous.livejournal.com 2012-02-21 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Seconding this, since I was about to post it myself. El Shaddai = Okami + Devil May Cry (literally, the teams from those games made it).

I know how you feel. I recently bought Skyrim, for example. While it's an excellent game, I just don't have much motivation to play it because it doesn't artistically and emotionally engage me the way other games have.

For me, it's not Okami, but mostly ICO and Shadow of the Colossus. I confess I haven't yet played Okami (though I have been meaning to), but I think you'll enjoy ICO and SotC. They're absolutely beautiful masterpieces of the gaming medium, and I highly recommend them.

There's also Flower, a short game you can buy on the PSN store. I can't recommend it enough, and if you love Okami you will probably appreciate Flower. It's quite honestly the most beautiful game I've ever seen in my life, and it profoundly affected me.

So, you're not alone. I've been ruined for most blockbuster games by those few exceptional cult classics that move beyond 'game' and reach the level of 'art'.

[identity profile] kyuusei.livejournal.com 2012-02-21 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I know that feeling all too well. Just replace Okami with Mass Effect...

(I haven't actually played much of Okami so I have no recs, sorry. :( )

[identity profile] kicktobefamous.livejournal.com 2012-02-21 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm assuming you have played Okamiden for the DS?

(Anonymous) 2012-02-22 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
OP Here.

Yup. Only game I've ever played through on my DS, actually. I don't really feel the urge to pick it up again now that I've beaten it, though.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-21 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
This may be a bit of a stretch, but if you like pretty art and fantasy settings, you might wanna give Prince of Persia (2008) a try. Stylistically it's beautiful and it's pretty short so you won't lose much time on it if you don't like it.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-21 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Ōkami is on my list of top-20 best video games ever. I've been playing since -94. (And yes, I'm aware of the Zelda influences found in the game.)
There have been a few games trying to replicate some of the feel and atmosphere of Ōkami, but IMO so far none have succeeded beyond trying. And that's okay. Just remember that there are loads of wonderful games besides Ōkami out there, you just have to keep looking.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-21 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Aww, my Ico/SotC suggestion was already suggested.

Well, if you're into it for the unique art style and characters, I'd probably have to recommend Psychonauts. It's less 'pretty' than surreal and silly, but very creative and amusing, with a lot of research and serious undertones to balance out the overarching lightheartedness. The music is also exceedingly catchy.

Wish they would re-release Okami for the ps3

I never really had that problem though. Although Uncharted and ME probaby made my expectations higher.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-22 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
But you can still play the ps2 version on ps3...? It's not like they *need* to re-release it, but I will admit the thought of trophies intrigues me.

But it's pretty impossible since the company went down, so.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-22 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
You can't play Okami on a PS3, sadly. It's not, whatchamacallit? "Backwards compatible"? Something like that. I had to buy some of my old favorite PS1 games from their store just so I could play it on my PS3.

[identity profile] cloud-riven.livejournal.com 2012-02-22 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
I can't play PS2 games on my PS3 as it's one of the slim models. iirc, only the first sku that was released at launch is backwards compatible with both PS1 and PS2.

Otherwise I'd have given my PS2 away :(

[identity profile] chocorate.livejournal.com 2012-02-22 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
No, you can't play it unless you have the fat ps3 which I don't have anymore, HD and hopefully easier to buy.

[identity profile] cloud-riven.livejournal.com 2012-02-22 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
What did you like about Okami though? It's probably a combination of a bunch of things of course, but is there any specific element that drew you in? Stuff like, Japanese folklore, the art style, the way it plays, story, etc. Makes it easier to rec stuff since you didn't mention what about certain games you don't enjoy. Still, may as well rec anyways!

- Shadow of the Colossus (I guess ICO as well, although if the general idea of escort missions is more of a hindrance to you, I wouldn't bother)
- the Dark Cloud series because they're colourful action rpgs. The second game is better imo)
- Shadow Hearts 1 & 2 (a bit different than the typical jrpg, but they're weirdly endearing)
- World of Goo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uiCm88Me_3U&feature=related) (physics puzzle game with adorable music and sound effects)
- MadWorld if you have a Wii, and if blood in your games is not an off-putting factor. (just for the art style and background commentators. not that it's not fun)
- Zelda series if you haven't played it already. Okami basically plays just like those games anyways (Wind Waker, Twilight Princess, and Skyward Sword I'd specifically rec since I'm not sure if you're wary of blocky N64 graphics?)
- Shadows of the Damned for quirky-weird characters, and if you're not opposed shooters.
- Deadly Premonition (if you're okay with an oddball survival horror)
- Mother/Earthbound series
- Rhythm Heaven series, as well as Elite Beat Agents/Ouendan (for art style, and MUSIC GAMES YAY)
- and also Beyond Good and Evil.

Word of warning about the Shadow Hearts games though. I loved them but some people really found them offensive due to their sexual humor and innuendo between the characters and the evironments (their enemies mainly--iirc, one enemy species had a penis-shaped protrusion and their attack involved hitting you with that protrusion).

(Anonymous) 2012-02-22 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
Bastion, maybe?

[identity profile] goobbledigook.livejournal.com 2012-02-22 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
In a previous Okami secret someone mentioned it being a clone of Zelda so you could try that?

If you're looking for more daring artistic games you could try Odin Sphere, or that one Wii game that looks like it but it has sexy ninjas or whatever! Also, if you have a psvita there's a game coming out, Sumioni, that is very similar to Okami, style wise.

Great taste by the way, Okami is an amazing game. (:

[identity profile] houdini-splicer.livejournal.com 2012-02-22 06:53 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh, Okami is utter perfection. One of my favorite games of all time.

[identity profile] barnabys-bane.livejournal.com 2012-02-22 06:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I love this game so much. One of the only games I've ever completed in full.
