I just wonder why it's ok to pay for fanart and not fic? Cause I'd do it in a minute. Both are using copyrighted characters. Both are works of fiction due to the artists creating whatever. Yet fic is 'Disclaimer: I don't make profit' whereas commissioned fanart is the opposite. If a fanartist is making money off of someone elses material, why is that medium ok or more accepted?

I wonder about the same thing, to be honest! And I think it's a double standard that is really annoying; even if you try the "but fanartists use pencils/sketchbooks/whatever they need to pay for," it doesn't work because I know several fanfic writers (myself included) who use paper to draft fanfic on before typing it up on the computer. In my opinion, it comes down to art being valued above fic in means of how much time and creative processes are involved in making the finished product. Because "anyone can write a fic," didntchaknow.

There's a bit of a noise going on in the comics fandom at the moment, after Marvel successfully sued the creator of Ghost Rider, forcing him to pay royalties for selling drawings of the character he created, because he's a copyrighted character. People in the know are now telling both professional artists who sell commissions at cons and fan artists who also take commissions to stop. Now. Because otherwise they run the risk of being sued - Marvel is now backed by Disney, and Disney are fiercely protective of their copyrighted characters. So if that trend continues, fan artists selling commissions could become just as taboo as fic writers doing the same.
