omg you have the worst luck ever :(

I remember reading fics back in the day, when nobody ever warned for that shit. The sites would always have one, big disclaimer that applied to all the fics (confirm your age as 18+, warning for sexual themes, etc) but it never went into specifics.
I was eleven when I stumbled into rape fics. At that point in my life I didn't really think about stuff like rape, so it was pretty traumatizing. And yet I kept reading these fics. I got over it pretty quickly, but to this day the queasiness and squick never goes away.

I distinctly recall being eleven and running into a fic involving semi-graphic rape, graphic torture, and many, many very graphic deaths, on which he warning was "May contain some mature content". If the writer doesn't know, how am I supposed to? The really sad part is it was actually pretty good, and I'd like it if I read it now, but it appears to have been taken down. Shame.

I think it's because it used to be illegal to have pornographic content up if there was even the slightest chance a minor could get their hands on it (and of course they did). So they never went into specifics and couldn't be accused if they didn't "know" the exact content of their site/fics. "I didn't know what was in that fic, I didn't write it, I'm just hosting it" was the best get-out-of-jail-for-free card.
I think there was even a time where you had to have private servers if you wanted to share something stated to be illegal aka pr0n. So as long as you didn't acknowledge what you had in your hands, everything was fine.

This was when people didn't know what the free Internet meant.
