This is the reason I think that people really need to make some kind of distinction between rape as a seriously treated subject for dark fic and rape as in an eroticised version to cater for people with kinks. If there were two separate tags for it – "non-con" for the eroticised version and "rape" for the realistic version – then maybe that would help. I dunno.

This times a billion.

Bodice rippers are not the same thing as trauma and recovery fic.

I feel like the lines are sometimes blurred a little too much to make that distinction though? Like, my own rape fic is very much for kink. But at the same time, it's not 'victim comes to enjoy it' or a bodice-ripper or anything like that, which is what a lot of people seem to think of when they hear about a rape kink. So it's kink for me but I really wouldn't call it eroticized in that there's nothing really 'sexy' about what happens.

Yeah, what the reader will get out of it can always be subjective. Even if it's a fic that seriously deals with rape, it can still possibly have some appeal to those who have that kink, and that doesn't mean those kind of readers can't simultaneously appreciate it as a dark and intense fic that doesn't soften the subject matter at all.

I guess the only easy way to make the distinction would be if those kinds of fics were always labeled as both "rapefic" and "darkfic," but it just isn't necessarily going to occur to everyone to clarify in any way like that just how much their fic avoids or leans toward the unrealistically erotic.

Same.

My favourite kind of rape fic is the realistic kind, and I enjoy it in a dark fic sort of way but it's also a sexual kink for me.

I guess putting dubcon or 'bodice-ripper rape porn' for the bodice-ripper victim-enjoys-it type would work?

It would be lovely if people neatly categorized them like that. Most of the time, they're used interchangeably and they really should denote two separate things.
