I always felt that, watching the last few episodes (starting where he asks if he could be her prince for that one knight) Touga realized his stupidness too late. Esp. when Juri tells her story how she can't remember the man who saved her sister--he looked completely horrified (as well as the rest of the cast).

I do like them more in the manga though <3

That was the impression I got too

I think he went from wanting to seduce Utena because of his whole lust for power thing, to wanting her because he could get any other girl he wanted except her and that bothered him, to realizing that he loved her. And he seemed resigned to the fact that he fucked up in the end too. In my mind that was the best possible way for his relationship (I'm using the term in the generic, platonic sense) with Utena to end.
