Agreed. Some actresses seem to always pick great scripts (which could be as much about representation (their agent, their manager) as the individual actress). Like Amy Adams, I've never seen her in a bad film. Kirsten Dunst has a really good hit-to-miss ratio too - even when she picks a film that doesn't do so well, it's an interesting film that potentially challenges her, a quirky experiment rather than a boring piece of fluff.

Natalie Portman really needs to stay away from rom-coms, in all honesty. Mostly because the vast majority of rom-coms are terrible now. Leave that to Katherine Heigl and her terrible taste in scripts.

I don't blame her for doing Star Wars, though. The opportunity to be part of one of the biggest franchises in cinema history? I don't blame ANYONE for wanting a piece of that. Especially since they wouldn't have known the quality of the entire trilogy when they signed their three-movie contract.

And I liked her in Thor. A lot. I think she's always engaging, and she can bring a vulnerability to characters without ever having them break - they can be soft and strong at the same time. (I think that's part of what makes her so incredible in Black Swan - seeing her ACTUALLY break is hypnotic.) I thought she really bought that to Thor and she had great chemistry with everyone she interacted with. I was really surprised to find out how many people didn't like her in that film.

Very true. My darling beloved Veronica Mars Kristen Bell, who actually has ALL THE TALENT IN THE WORLD and is so fucking pretty you'd think people would throw good scripts at her, makes one shitty romcom after another. The ONLY one that was not abjectly hideous was Forgetting Sarah Marshall, which was actually both funny and heartfelt (two notes that so-called romantic comedies never seem to hit these days) but that was buried in a swamp of bad. She is just floundering and it upsets my noir-show-loving heart

I also can't blame Portman for signing on for the Star Wars prequels either. Especially because she was a teenager at that point. It's just unfortunate what those things turned out to be.

The sad thing is, I think Forgetting Sarah Marshall was good because it focused on a man's perspective, had a man as a main character. Because it's about a man, it can be marketted towards men, so more time and thought is put into the script. Scripts that revolve around women (so the majority of rom-coms) are so by-the-book it's insulting, but Hollywood just doesn't give a crap. :(

awwwww that makes me sad. :( Jason Segel (the star of the movie) wrote it himself so I thought it was awesome because he's awesome

but yeah, it's hard to ignore the way Hollywood clearly just thinks "WOMEN LOVE THIS SHIT" and make more and more with the exact same shitty template

I just wanted to say that I still miss Veronica Mars. I heard she's in a new show. I don't know much about it, but apparently she plays a bitch. I have a hard time getting my brain around that just because I haven't really seen her be super bitchy in her roles. Mean spirited, but not right out cut throat bitch.

You're right about Star Wars and now that I think about it, Thor was a smart choice for her and follows along the same lines. The Avengers have a huge fan base and the movies have been growing, so it was a chance to be apart of something big. Paired with her fame from Star Wars, she'd be targeting the same demographic. I didn't mind her in Thor and didn't think the movie was terrible, but it was kind of hokey. I thought she did a good job with what she was given.
