Completely agreed, OP! I cannot understand how or why so many people have latched onto this pairing. I love Rumpel too, and yeah I'd want him to get his happy ending. But 1.) He already had his story, he did not need to be The Beast too. And 2.) I just cannot see the whole Rumpel/Belle thing being swoon, much less ship worthy. The pacing of the episode didn't help either, it was just so forced that it was literally painful to watch.

I much prefer the idea of Rumpel/Ruby. Emilie de Ravin's Belle set my teeth on edge - no interest in books at all, and she was just... blah. Haven't even finished the episode yet. I think the joke about him wanting Belle to "skin the children he killed" was just him being a bitter arse - everybody thinks he's the Beast already, why not play along with their expectations?

SAME! (That look in the pilot which they STILL have yet to come back to was what did it.) But that's not to say I couldn't necessarily see him with anyone else if they did it right (however with them not doing it right, my stance doesn't seem to be changing any time soon), but Jane just basically used Belle as a full-on Mary Sue. And at the same time, Gaston came off looking more like Adam/Beast than Rumpel was supposed to have. Instead he more or less came off as Gaston.

And yeah, exactly, about that line. He seemed to have a lot of fun with Belle's reaction there, so I kinda see it as the so-called creepy old guy at the end of the street just having fun with the neighborhood kids' semi-irrational fears of him.

Someone felt I was over reacting above but you can see how I feel. Belle was a pathetic mary sue, a shade of what she used to be, used to get into Rumpels pants.

Well, referencing your above comment about favorite fairy tales, it's not like the Disney one (although admittedly probably the best known version nowadays) had much in common with the original versions of the story from hundreds of years ago either. *shrug*

The thing with stories that originate so far back (tale as old as time, anyone?) is they naturally get reinterpreted so many times over the years that it's difficult to draw lines based on 'correctness' of the story vs 'favorite personal interpretation' IMO. For example, since all of them have their good and bad points, I can't say other than which struck me more that '1700's Cinderella is better than Disney's but the Egyptian/Chinese versions of the story are best' based on anything more than how *I* like them, you know?

IMO he was just trolling her with the skinning children comment to try and gauge her reaction- and he doesn't really do anything like that to her again, so yeah, I feel after x many years he's just having whatever fun he can with the expectations people have of him. (Like his original 'Look at the empty door now back to me- I'm sitting in your chair!' moment.)

Maybe I'm just being defensive because I enjoyed the episode, but Beauty and the Beast and variations thereof are kind a thing for me, and, uh, I'm really weirded out by people being pissed that Belle isn't a huge bookworm. Being pissed about the lack of development for their relationship, I can see, or their choice of actress for Belle, or Rumplestiltskin as the Beast. But not the lack of bookworm Belle. Yes, of course she's bookish in the Disney version, but despite Disney and ABC being affiliated, they aren't exactly following any of their animated versions to the letter in any of the OUAT stories, you know? Also, if you want bookworm/bluestocking Belle, read Robin McKinley's Beauty, which is, as far as I know, where Disney got the idea of Belle the bookish outsider from. Her Rose Daughter is good too--yes, she wrote two versions of BATB. Three, I guess, if you count Sunshine.

This! I would be perfectly happy to be gifted a library myself, but that really isn't a plot point to the original character at all and I don't think that takes anything away from her for that detail to be left out.

So much yes to all of this. I like Rumpel and Carlyle does a fabulous job but he didn't really need to be the Beast. I also don't really get how people are going crazy over the ship because I watched the episode and just did. not. see. it.

I think I would have preferred a different beast and if there was to be another backstory episode about Rumpelstiltskin, maybe one about his original wife? Or his son dealing with his new evil Dad? There's a lot you could do with him I'm sure.

Supposedly his next one deals with his son?

And anyways if they had thrown in a totally new characte the audience would have had even less time to try and relate to why the character is the way he is on top of trying to do the same for Belle's character at the same time.

With this we at very least get some more background on why Regina and Rumpel- whole could have been a unstoppable axis of fairytale evil if they ever wanted to work together- have this huge wedge between them, and why Mr. Gold is backing Emma on Team Anti-Regina in modern times.

I don't watch the show, but DAMN, this pairing has exploded on my tumblr dash in the past couple of weeks.

I like Rumpel/Emma myself, in a clashy head-games type of way.
