People of the OUaT fandom! Is there any more context to this, or is that actually how it plays out in canon? Because I've been contemplating trying to jump into this series, and BatB is one of my favorite fairy tales, so.... I feel like I should brace myself if this is the case.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-25 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
I would say brace yourself. I love OUAT but this was not my favorite episode, they didn't really spend enough time developing the Rumples as Beast and Belle story, so what OP said is pretty accurate.

Some people loved the episode though, so you might like it, but if you don't I can tell you the series overall is very good fun and there will be lots of other episodes to like.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-25 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
It kind of is?

On the flip side, Carlyle or whatever his name is has awesome chemistry with people if the fangirls are any hint, so I don't really blame her.

[identity profile] visitingparis.livejournal.com 2012-02-25 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
It seems like the majority enjoyed it, but it's mostly a love it or hate it kind of episode. You should still try the series though. It's fun!

[identity profile] ninety6tears.livejournal.com 2012-02-25 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
MTE, hah. I was excited to give this show a chance but it sucks if they failed at my favorite fairy tale.

[identity profile] spiletta42.livejournal.com 2012-02-25 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
The secret is accurate. The show has ridiculously sloppy writing. There doesn't seem to be any sort of logic between 90% of the actions taken by the characters, and there are huge plot holes in every episode. However, the acting is some of the best on television right now, and the costumes are fantastic. So if you're prepared to pretend that loads of character stuff is happening off screen to explain away all the annoyances, it's well worth watching. Or shut off the sound, that works too.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-25 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
I think the lightness in terms of development for Rumpelstiltskin and Belle's relationship was for the fairytale feel, since that's a bit of the pattern of the show -- the fairytale!world moments are more light and whimsical whereas in Storybrooke the stories are more complex, since one stationed in fantasy and the other in reality. I agree that Rumpelstiltskin and Belle's relationship isn't as developed as other fairytale!world moments, but I think that was more to get the effect of "this is a chance encounter of true love that wasn't anticipated, but just happened," so it wasn't slowly built. But at the same time, this episode is like a prologue to Rumpelstitskin/Belle. The real development of their relationship, in which they really fall in love, will probably happen in Storybrooke. Their love story wasn't meant to unfold in the fairytale!world.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-25 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
I love the fairy tale aspect of the show; the modern part I vary between meh to like. The costuming is gorgeous and the acting is some of the best, esp. for a brand new show. Don't expect the show to make a lot of sense right now. It's by some of the same people that did Lost. The episodes sort of tie together every week.

I loved Belle/Beast in Disney; this version had great potential. I'm hoping we see more of the pairing developing in future flashbacks but I doubt it.

The legit. criticisms include: Spoilers :

We're not shown why Belle falls for Beast. It goes from him accepting her as a maid at his castle to instructing her on her duties and her sleeping in a dungeon to next scene when she has feelings! for him. Then he frees her; she comes back; he doesn't keep the promise to tell her about his son; she kisses him and it freaks him out for a reason; he rages, throws her in dungeon and then throws her out of the castle. That's pretty it. Gorgeous acting by Beast's actor. I liked Belle's too.

Moral is that instead of learning to see past the outer ugliness to the inner beauty is that insecurity and/or poor self-esteem and/or a love of power (don't want to spoil it that much) can really wreck a relationship.

I didn't actually see it that way; Belle in the Disney or the OUaT canon is a curious girl, determined and usually unafraid.

In the OUaT universe, she had good reason to get to know Rumplestilskin--she's the one who volunteered to go with him, and there was nothing enchanting about his mansion or so-obviously-heroic about her going with him (unlike the Disney movie, it wasn't to save her father, it was because Rumplestilskin's help for their countryside seemed too valuable to pass up).

This episode made me nervous because it gives a lot more credence to the theory that, because the Lost producers are involved, we're going to have a lot more questions than we will answers, including how this subplot plays out.

[identity profile] visitingparis.livejournal.com 2012-02-24 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I think Emilie de Ravin said in an interview that her Belle sees through people. So because of her perceptiveness, she knew that he was just ~putting up walls~ (while it's a lovely thought I wasn't completely sold on this myself considering the scenes we saw, but oh well). There was supposedly thirteen minutes or so cut from the episode too. Maybe there was more development between them. Hopefully those cuts make it to the special features on the DVD set. I wish they had axed the whole girls' date night and David's stupidity because it didn't add to the episode at all.

[identity profile] dj-rocca.livejournal.com 2012-02-25 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
There has to be A LOT cut from this ep and the one after given Raphael Sbarge was in BOTH episodes, did we see this? No.

The worst thing about it, it was his birthday in RL when episode 12 aired and had been telling all his fans he'd be on. Then we got that train wreck. Ugh. It makes me want to vomit, choke on my vomit and DIE.

If all those cut scenes filled in a lot of the gaps between those missing months of Belle being in his castle/day to day little interactions that lead to what we actually *do* see, that's a real shame. Hopefully some of that makes it into flashbacks in further episodes.

Agreed on the rest of the things they left IN the episode from modern times, except I find Mr. Gold trolling Mr. Not So Charming's fidelity issues in the store to be amusing. -_^

[identity profile] galerian-ash.livejournal.com 2012-02-24 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, to play the devil's advocate for a second, you don't know for sure that she didn't have that kind of development/process. It wasn't shown, sure, but it could very well still have happened -- we're never told exactly how much time passed during the episode; they could've been living together for months. Aaand that's what fanfiction is for, AMIRITE?! That's what I'm currently writing, in any case ;P

But yeah, if it was up to me, I'd gladly ditch the Charming/Snow arc for the sake of giving these two more airtime. That ain't gonna happen though, so we just gotta make the best of it.

[identity profile] iced-shut.livejournal.com 2012-02-25 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
Truuuuth. I saw this and was immediately convinced that a significant amount of time has passed between dungeon throwing and their aired conversation.

Yeah their romance left a bad taste in my mouth. As much as people say Disney's animated version is stockholm syndrome I am very surprised more people aren't criticizing this episode for the way they handled the story.

We all know Rumpelstiltskin has layers after the episode with his son, but how the hell does Belle know that? Why were we not being shown more of this story?

Maybe it'll get better when they revisit her character, but I just felt the episode was paced very badly and maybe they should have approached it differently.

[identity profile] josiefier.livejournal.com 2012-02-25 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Completely agreed, OP! I cannot understand how or why so many people have latched onto this pairing. I love Rumpel too, and yeah I'd want him to get his happy ending. But 1.) He already had his story, he did not need to be The Beast too. And 2.) I just cannot see the whole Rumpel/Belle thing being swoon, much less ship worthy. The pacing of the episode didn't help either, it was just so forced that it was literally painful to watch.

Completely agree with this secret.

Especially in the scene when Rumple asks Belle why she ~chose~ to come with him. Um, maybe because otherwise her whole village would die and you wouldn't help unless she came with you as a servant prisoner....? I mean... when the cartoon does it better....

[identity profile] maddarilke.livejournal.com 2012-02-25 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
The problem with this secret is that it implies that this episode is the ONLY one which will show scenes from Rumple and Belle's time together, and that's REALLY not how this show works. It does not have a fixed timeline, and stories are jumped into and out of in every episode, out of order and only as randomly as it seems to tie in with the episode theme.

I believe very strongly, based on spoilers and things which have been suggested by cast and fandom, that there will be more shown of Belle's time with Rumple.

Well, tbh, I was glad she didn't really try to fix him, because the idea that you can waltz into someones life and fix them with the power of love and righteousness is one of those "sounds great but the reality is incredibly shitty" ideas.

She wanted to get away from her family and was in love with the idea of doing something heroic and self-sacrificing. She grew to like Rumplestilkin warts and all. And he pushed her buttons, the way a lot of people who are distrustful of relationships will, but once he trusted her he was reasonably decent with her. They would have been fine if the Witch hadn't deliberately broken their trust. And in the end, Rumplestilskin is who he is, he's not secretly nice person under the beastly exterior. Even when he was non-magical, he wasn't exactly a shining moral beacon.

It's hard to completely judge because the fairytale part of the episode takes place over an extended period of time- possibly months from one scene shown between the characters and the next. The way the show's set up/leaked spoilers of Belle's character being in at least two more upcoming episodes leads me to believe we'll likely see more of that relationship in future flashbacks, and agree with the other commentors that their modern day relationship will likely be more important in the long run.

Details I don't feel will spoil you for key plot points overly much, just address what you asked about:

- The Belle character starts out by agreeing to go with "the beast" for the rest of forever in exchange for him saving her entire town from ogres... Which no one else wants her to do, but she explains later she's been looking for a way to be brave her entire life without any opportunity as an upper class well bred young lady etc/wants much more than this provincial life.

- He does intentionally troll her a bit when she gets to the castle- which his character does seem to do to everyone for his own amusement so it's not as if it's a personal attack- but that doesn't appear to be an act he keeps up.

- They actually have a conversation after she's (I believe) been there for awhile about why she's being nice to him etc and she points out if she's never going to see another person again in her whole life, then why can't she a least know him?

- When she does try and shake up their relationship, it's because she was intentionally misled by the big bad of the series combined with the fact that she's still at heart a well intentioned wannabe brave girl who's trying to do the right thing via romance tips she likely originally lifted from one too many books.

All in all I don't feel their relationship was any more rushed than the Disney version- less so in some respects- she in paticular knows him a lot better than Disney's Belle knows her Beast when they have their first major (West Wing) fight and she storms out. OUaT Belle definitely seems to have a much calmer head on her shoulders/understands her "beast" a lot more.

Added bonus, the fandom's fantastic and finding Disney Easter eggs in the episode is fun! ^_^

[identity profile] ginpenguin.livejournal.com 2012-02-25 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
I can't lie. Most of what came out of this episode for me was mental images of him pinning her to the wall in a sexual frenzy. Yup. Totally not awkward at all. >.>

[identity profile] zippytheavenger.livejournal.com 2012-02-25 04:52 am (UTC)(link)
I agree, but I kind of like this version of events. Belle decided she was going to 'fix' him, and then it blew up in her face and everything went all to shit. That's what happens when you assume things, Belle.

Yeah, they didn't get anywhere close to enough development, but I've gotten kinda used to this sort of monkeyshine from this show. The writing really needs hammering out. This show has pacing problems like I can hardly believe. The split between timelines was an interesting idea terribly executed, and it seems like in trying to cram both storylines in at once neither one gets enough time to convey the information it needs to convey, and an hour-long episode goes by where barely anything happens.

But I like the things I like about it more than I dislike the things I dislike about it. So yeah.

[identity profile] haro.livejournal.com 2012-02-25 08:37 am (UTC)(link)
I always get a little irritated when people accuse Disney's Beauty and the Beast of being Stockholm Syndrome. But this story in OUaT? It was definitely Stockholm Syndrome.

Which is one of the reasons I'm kind of meh on fandom's take on it as omg teh greatest love story. Yep, she was his true love, but that doesn't mean their relationship isn't massively fucked up. And personally, in this case I think that her being his true love doesn't mean they should end up with each other. For one, Rumpelstiltskin has mercilessly ruined the lives of countless people/or killed them, so I don't understand why he should get a happily ever after anyway.

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2012-02-25 01:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I think in this version the lack of visual time to show their aquaintanceship developing gave it a bit of a Stockholmy feel. Nonetheless I lurved it. I can fill in the gaps in my own mind.
